In 1946, the world of biblical studies was rocked by the discovery of several scrolls in caves around the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea Scrolls contained translations of portions of the books of the Hebrew scriptures, a manual of discipline for the community responsible for producing the scrolls and a scroll that narrated an apocalyptic battle between the sons of light, led by a figure called the Teacher of Righteousness, and the sons of darkness. These documents gave biblical scholars a tantalizing glimpse of the then relatively unknown period of first-century Judaism and of the theology of at least one of its sects. Very quickly, though, the ownership of the scrolls became a point of great political contention between the Israeli government and American scholars like Frank Moore Cross at Harvard, and, consequently, translations of the scrolls appeared very slowly, if at all. Finally, in 1991, author Martin Abegg, then a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati, published a volume of previously unreleased scrolls. Following this publication, the Huntington Library announced that it had photographs of all the unreleased scrolls and that it would allow unrestricted access to the photos. Wise, Abegg and Cook's collection is now the most complete collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls available. The authors' English translations capture the nuances of the Hebrew, and sometimes the Greek, of the scrolls, many of which are merely fragments. Also contained here is a thorough introduction to the history of the discovery of the scrolls and a theory about the community that produced the scrolls: the authors convincingly argue that the Essenes, to whom the scrolls are traditionally attributed, were likely not the community responsible for writing the scrolls. For all interested in learning from primary texts about the development of first-century Judaism, this is an essential volume

Wise (The Dead Sea Scrolls Uncovered, LJ 2/1/93) and his team of scholars and writers occupy what might be called the minority position in scrolls scholarship: The Qumran group cannot be identified simply as "Essenes," the site itself was not a headquarters, and few if any of the scrolls were written at Qumran. The position of Wise et al., in contrast with the "Standard Model" (as they call it), is set forth in a brief introduction along with the usual information about the discovery and publication of the scrolls. One of the most helpful things these translators do for nonspecialist readers is to explain the process of manuscript reconstruction and the use of brackets and parentheses to indicate missing portions of text and the like. The translations themselves are generally more idiomatic and less stiff than those in Florentino G. Martinez's The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated (Eerdmans, 1996. 2d ed.). As the fruit of an alternative approach to the origins and significance of the scrolls, and as a smooth translation, this work should be in collections where there is scholarly and popular interest.?Craig W. As many people know, access to the Dead Sea Scrolls, a cache of 2,000-year-old Jewish writings, was long denied to the public and to most of the academic world. The scrolls were finally wrested away from the scholarly team that controlled them when one of this book's authors, Martin Abegg, used computer technology to reconstruct hundreds of texts from an extant concordance. Except for the original seven intact scrolls (held and translated promptly by the Israelis), the rest of the scrolls were in thousands of fragments. What the authors present here is quite amazing. Almost every legible portion of the texts is translated into English, and commentary is offered for each text. Perhaps only those truly interested in the subject will make their way through the texts themselves, but even the most general of readers should be fascinated by the authors' introduction. Not only do they succinctly summarize scroll history and show readers how to read the scrolls, they put forth their own theories and accessibly compare them with what have been the standard interpretations. Excellent, Honest Resource

This volume is an excellent book to either start or enhance one's study of the scrolls discovered near Qumran, commonly referred to as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Although there has been some negative critique, (see other reviews) this book is very unbiased and scholarly in nature. Yes, there is an added commentary, and words filled in where there were no words preserved, but that is besides the fact. There has been no cover-up attempt to claim that these added texts are somehow the original; a guide at the beginning of the book clearly explains how to see what was actually contained in the scrolls and what was not. The commentary is necessary especially for those who have never looked in the scrolls at all to begin with, to at least give a basic framework. By nature, any commentary will have a level of bias - but it's not as though the book claims to have an inspired commentary - ignore the commentary if you're solely interested in the text!
I have had Dr. Wise for several graduate-level classes, and he has been very scholarly in his teaching, presenting the information that is known, and only on rare occasion giving his actual opinion instead of simply what has been discovered. His area of specialty is the Second Temple period in which the Dead Sea Scrolls play a significant role, which is one reason why he is so involved with them, and why this particular volume is so well written: it from the perspective of one who really cares about the issues surrounding the Dead Sea Scrolls.
I would recommend this volume to anyone as a fascinating source for study.

This is how this book stacks up

This book needs to be considered alongside _The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated_ edited by Florentino Garcia-Martinez. Both are "comprehensive" translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls which have become available since the end of the embargo in the fall of 1991.
Wise, Abegg, and Cook organize this book primarily by the Qumran manuscript number. The exceptions are the manuscripts found in Cave 1 which have no number. These appear at the beginning of the book along with other manuscripts which relate to the same text. So for example, the Thanksgiving Scroll appears at the beginning of the book along with 4Q427-432. The Damascus Document also appears at the beginning of this book along with manuscripts Geniza A and B.
At the end of the book there is a helpful index of DSS manuscripts and the page(s) on which they may be found. There is also an index of references to other liturature, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and Rabbinic texts. So for example the editors find some connection between 4Q525 and Matthew 5.3-10. Both are beatitudes.
It is not a disadvantage of this book that it contains no Hebrew texts. I find that I want to look at photos of the manuscripts and judge the translations for myself. Nor is it a disadvantage of this book that it does not contain any biblical texts. Those may be found in a translated form in Martin Abegg's _Dead Sea Scrolls Bible_.
The advantage this book does have is its commentary. The editors have brought numerous significant items to the the attention of the reader which the non-specialist probably had not noticed. Even so, the commentary will bring some enlightenment to DSS specialists as well.

A good resource (with reservations)

In reading "James the Brother of Jesus" by Robert Eisenman, I found that I needed a translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls. I chose this edition over Vermes, who makes use of pseudo-biblical archaic language in his translations, because the language in Wise is clear and modern, and the introductions are excellent. My reservation is due to a puzzling ediorial decision: there are no informative headers on the pages to let the reader know at a glance which scroll is being looked at, particularly annoying in the longer scrolls. What is gained by inconviencing the the reader?

An excellent book on algorithm analysis

The book represents a well written, consistent and easy to follow view on the area of algorithm analysis. It gives an excellent overview of various mathematical and computer science areas, including but not limited to combinatorial geometry, NP-problems, complexity theory, graph theory, algorithm analysis, dynamic programming and even computational geometry.
Most of the chapters are intended for a senior level undergraduate and graduate student, but some (such as part 4 devoted to complexity problems) are more suitable for "mature" audience and require some preliminary knowledge in the area.
I found chapters on sorting, data structures, recursion and functional programming well written and structured, and examples to be practical as well as informative.
Sections on amortized analysis, randomized algorithms, approximation algorithms and iteration improvement deal with current directions in the algorithmic research and provide an excellent overview of the "state-of-the-art" in these areas. I also enjoyed reading through the section on greedy algorithms (shortest path and minimum spanning tree problems).
Section on computational complexity and analysis of the relationship between complexity classes seems to be a bit complicated, those who are interested in this area should probably do some preliminary reading.
The last section on computational geometry (my area of expertise) and applications of Voronoi diagrams could be extended, but even in the current state it givs a pretty good idea of what computational geometry is all about.
Overall, I give to this book a "5 star" review and recommend it for anyone who is seriously interested in learning exactly how algorithm design and analysis work. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can only wish that author would write more books like that in the future!

Overpriced, uninspired.

I've used this book for my undergraduate algorithms class and I must say, I find it incredibly frustrating. I will say it is not all bad. The book does a decent job of providing grounded explanations, but fails miserably in numerous ways. Just a few of my more basic issues with the book are as follows.

1. A multitude of grammatical flaws. The book was, by definition, poorly edited. This is unacceptable when considering the outlandish price.

2. There are absolutely no solutions. I don't believe all or even most solutions need be present, but this is a fairly common practice that is completely ignored by this book and only works to hinder students confidence in whether or not they've successful absorbed and digested the material. The book is also not commonly used, so there is little to no discussion online of common issues experienced with the book.

3. The book lacks some of the more detailed mathematical explanations that some students might be looking for. This may only be an issue for a small subset of students, but is certainly worth noting, when such explanations are easily found in other, more effectives texts.

4. All counting in the book starts at 1, not 0. This is subjective and in fact most algorithms textbooks do this, but I still personally find it annoying when implementing algorithms based on the books pseudocode, the format of which I am also not a fan. If you find yourself in the same boat, consider reading this threads explanation on why many textbooks do this. [...]

As you can see others have had success with this book and it is certainly possible to learn from this book, but I thoroughly believe there are better, far more effective books for teaching a class on Algorithms. Personally, I would suggest either The Algorithm Design Manual or Introduction to Algorithms, 3rd Edition (MIT Press). Neither books are without their flaws, but both are clearly stronger choices than this. Especially considering they are significantly cheaper and there is far more information available on the specifics covered in either of them.

Better than the other books.. but not perfect

This is a great book overall, but I give it 4 stars as it lacks the mathematical explanations that I personally was looking for. I am graduate student in Computer Science and a E-Commerce Consultant by profession. This book is more detailed than the Sedweick (I can't spell his name) in the sense that it has some more of a mathematical approach. It lacks the level of explanation that the Sedweick book provided. It has some math, but overlooks some steps thus targeting someone with a pretty solid math background, not someone with sophomore level undergraduate math background.
Overall.. if you're a student taking an algorithms or advanced algorithms class (especially a graduate class), you might want to invest in this book.

This book is just ok. It's pocket size and highly readable, with a basic overview of the field. The info is relatively formulaic and basic. Good for a quick read prior to a plastic surgery rotation but that's about it. This is not a book I reach for very often.

Caution

In my opinion this text is one that should be read from an Orthodox perspective. There are many items within that if you are not Orthodox could be taken out of perspective (5th step). The content of the text is excellent and is so widely acclaimed in the Orthodox world that it is commonly read in many Orthodox monasteries in addition to laity during lent. So be caution if you choose to delve into this book, and you may not want to lean on your own understanding of the content.

An incredible guide in the spiritual life

When I first read Saint John Climacus' work, I read this edition and was somewhat disappointed with it, though I did not know why. An orthodox monastic suggested I get the Holy Transfiguration Monastery edition. The latter translation is translated in the older style and thus seems more authentic. As I recall the version here seemed to have too much of the translator's own interpretaions in it. That was offputting to me.
This book gives guidance as to how to strip oneself of the passions of the old man and put on the new man.
I reread this work every Lent and am always amazed at the insights it gives. When I don't understand a passage I just move on and know that the insight will come at a later reading. The book gives incredible insight into the passions. If one is working on a specific passion like anger or vainglory, the book can be a remarkable help.
This book is read every evening in one monastery I know of, and monastics reread it every Lent.
After writing this review I realized that the five star rating I gave it is for the Holy Transfiguration Monastery edition. I would have to give the Paulist Press version a lower rating for the above-mentiioned reasons. Maybe three stars?

In this fascinating memoir of his life journey, Tom Brodie, Irishman, Dominican priest, and biblical scholar, recounts the steps he has taken, in an eventful life in many countries, to his conclusion that the New Testament account of Jesus is essentially a rewriting of the Septuagint version of the Hebrew Bible, or, in some cases, of earlier New Testament texts. Jesus' challenge to would-be disciples (Luke 9.57-62), for example, is a transformation of the challenge to Elijah at Horeb (1 Kings 19), while his journey from Jerusalem and Judea to Samaria and beyond (John 2.23-4.54) is deeply indebted to the account of the journey of God's Word in Acts 1-8. The work of tracing literary indebtedness and art is far from finished but it is already possible and necessary to draw a conclusion: it is that, bluntly, Jesus did not exist as a historical individual. This is not as negative as may at first appear. In a deeply personal coda, Brodie begins to develop a new vision of Jesus as an icon of God's presence in the world and in human history.

A great counterpoint to Bart Ehrman's book Did Jesus Exist

The "discovery" in "Memoir of a Discovery" is Brodie's realization that Jesus is a literary character and did not exist as a historical person at all. This is diametrically opposed to the thesis of Bart Ehrman's book Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth which answers that question with an unqualified "yes."

Ehrman's book repeats over and over again the assertion that no reputable New Testament scholars deny the historicity of Jesus, and Brodie's book certainly blows that assertion out of the water. Brodie is an established biblical scholar who heads an institution devoted to biblical scholarship and has published widely on topics in New Testament studies.

Ehrman's key point is the existence of multiple independent witnesses to the historical Jesus. Brodie argues that none of these are genuinely independent witnesses. All of the New Testament sources are actually dependent on Old Testament texts and each other, and later sources are dependent on the New Testament. Ehrman cites Josephus as another independent witness, and Brodie discounts that independence also. He points out that a genuinely independent witness generally provides information we don't find elsewhere, but Josephus doesn't. Moreover, Josephus could have had access to the gospels, and Brodie cites evidence making that plausible.

Ehrman makes much of his criteria for historicity, but he virtually ignores all of the scholarly work being done of late on criteria for literary dependence. As a result, the Ehrman book "cannot deal adequately with Price and Thompson, and shows little awareness that -- whatever some of their opinions -- their work has a place in a central new field of biblical research." (229)

A key problem with Ehrman's approach, which Brodie corrects, is that Rule One in any valid list of criteria for historicity would be to determine the literary context of a source, and this is missing from Ehrman's approach. As Brodie puts it, "If a newspaper announces cheap flights to Mars, it is important to note whether the advertisement occurs in the Travel Section or in the Cartoons-and-Jokes Page. Clarity on the literary factor is Rule One." (122) The gospels can be seen as having been intentionally written to look like history though most of their stories come from rewriting Old Testament texts. Given that understanding, the simplest interpretation that explains the literary data is to see the gospels as portrayals of a literary character. "In essence: once the literary connection is seen, the historical explanation is unnecessary; it goes beyond what is needed to explain the data." (159)

Brodie also addresses Ehrman's insistence on the reliability of oral tradition and his assertion that early Christians would not have invented a crucified messiah. Literary connections make oral tradition unnecessary, and "when there was a need to express the ancient contradiction or paradox between God-based hope and life's inevitable sufferings it was appropriate to express those sufferings in a clear contemporary image -- Roman crucifixion. It was doubly appropriate in the context of a rhetorical world that sought dramatic effect and energeia (graphic presentation) . . ." (230-1)

I highly recommend reading Brodie's Beyond the Quest for the Historical Jesus after reading Ehrman's Did Jesus Exist. You'll read something that comes off as absolutely certain and then read a counterpoint that calls into question everything you were just starting to take for granted. Even if you don't agree with everything Brodie says, you can't help but recognize the reasonableness and validity of most of his arguments, yet according to Ehrman such arguments are unreasonable and invalid.

Jesus Symbol of God

This is one of the best books I've ever read on the historicity of Jesus and the formation of the New Testament. Brodie states that the life of Jesus is completely derived from Old Testament stories; he gives several examples to demonstrate this; and he describes the compellingly logical methods he used to reach his conclusions. He concludes that in the New Testament Jesus symbolizes god, and that Paul, also a fictional character, symbolizes Moses. But despite his realization that the NT is a reworking and modernization of the OT, and that both books are populated by swarms of fictional characters, Brodie, oblivious to the fact that god is but one more fictional biblical character, insists without evidence that god planned that the NT would come out exactly the way it did! (127, note 2) Brodie, so analytical and brilliant when determining that Jesus and Paul are myths created by unknown authors, fumbles when it comes to god's authorship. Why doesn't he apply the same detective skills in tracking down god's hand in all this as he does with the rest of his book?

Brodie throws in a little theology, arguing unconvincingly that god exists, offering a garbled apologetic explanation of the problem of evil, and naively stating his belief in the harmony of science and religion.

I especially enjoyed Brodie's insightful approach to Josephus, a supposedly independent witness to Jesus' existence. Brodie points out that even if Josephus did mention Jesus, which is questionable, he very likely read about him in the gospels, which of course indicates that he probably was not an independent witness.

I read that Tom Brodie, who is a Catholic priest, was rewarded by his church for writing this book with a suspension from his teaching duties--such a reward for such a good book.

Surprizing, unusual, novel, sure to be controversial

Brodie essentially writes an auto-biography of his time as a teacher and researcher in the Catholic church as a Dominican priest. The key conclusion that he has come to during his life's work is that both Jesus and Paul were not actual historical figures, but that they are the reworking of key themes from the Hebrew Bible (particularly narrative, especially the Elijah-Elisha narrative). Hence, this thesis flies in the face of most historical work in early Christian studies where Paul and Jesus are understood as being definite historical individuals.

Personally, I find his thesis so highly implausible that it is simply impossible (for practical purposes), but read it for youself and see what you think.
But please remember that we have to account for why Nero would be able to think that he could use the Christians in Rome as scapegoats for the great fire of 64CE - if most of the New Testament literature was not yet composed at this point, and oral tradition is largely out, and that Jesus and Paul were literary fictions, then what was it that these Christians believed that made them so unpopular and capable of being scapegoated by Nero and yet were functioning as an identifiable group in Rome by 64C.E.? - Broadie only mentions Tacitus briefly without properly dealing with his text, for contra Broadie he does introduce new information, namely that the Christians were hated for their shameful deeds and hatred of the human race, whatever all these entaled, and that Christians were dressed in animal skins and torn to death by dogs as a form of punishment as well as being set alight at night. That is new information not found in the New Testament or Christian sources of the same time as far as I know and I am not buying any sort of argument that Tacitus could have gleaned this information from the Domitianic persecutions or something similar, though Broadie's argument would seem to require something to this effect.

Anyhow, his book is not badly written, it is interesting for sure and I think that it is worthwhile engaging with, though I find him particulary weak on the classical authors mentioning of Jesus - he needs to work that out more carefully to be convincing. As well his analysis tends to rule out that historical individuals could attempt to immitate great individuals from the past, and yet we see this quite often with military leaders after Alexander the Great, a strong example being Trajan's defeat of the Parthians/Ancient Persia and making his way to the Perian Gulf planning to aim for India. So yes, as Broadie will sometimes admit, more work needs to be done on issues which he raises. Not such a great bebuttal to Erhman's did Jesus Exist? but its a decent start. I do not have an intrinsic problem with either/or both Paul and Jesus consciously emmulating previous biblical motifs and characters, but that does not mean that they never existed, that I am not buying, at least not until he makes a stronger caase if he can.
