Throughout the book there is a strong emphasis on the mathematical modeling necessary for designing a good feedback control system. The appendixes summarize analysis of linear dynamic systems, synthesis of analog and digital feedback control, simulation, and modeling of flexible vehicles.

Useful book

I am at a loss on what to say about this book. In some ways the book is not what it should be as in the analysis of spacecraft attitude control. The emphasis here is the simplification of the nonlinear Euler equations to simple linear equations to which bang-bang and other control types are then applied. Nothing wrong with that. But if he had left the equations nolinear and applied sliding mode control the results would have been virtually identical and more profound and usable. At the same time there is much information on spacecraft attitude control in the book which is nearly impossible to find elsewhere. The same is true of helicopter and airplane control. The complete emphasis on LQR control is quaint as it is the best possible control. What about more realistic control systems for real aircraft? There is a little in the book on this but very little. The sections on control of flexible systems correspond to the way many missle modelers approach the problem because of its simplicity and usefulness and several useful and interesting examples are worked out. Overall this is a useful reference for certain subject areas but it takes a sophisticated reader to separate the wheat from the chaff. It must be admitted, however, that learning the entire book would not be a bad thing for anyone. Just limiting.

It's helpful for getting used to computer testing/NCLEX style but some of the questions are ridiculous. One question asked what percent of teenagers try marijuana and it was fill in the blank...I guess 49% and got it wrong because the answer was 50%... I'm in a BSN program that has a really great reputation (or so I'm told) and I was answering a few questions with my clinical instructor and even she thought some of the questions were very demanding for a nursing student. It's also impossible to "level up" sometimes. I took almost 400 questions in "health promotion and maintenance" and "reduction of risk potential" and still couldn't. I know I'm no genius but I'm not that clueless. Other sections, you take 48 questions and level up. It's a good program in theory but has some kinks that need to be worked out. We were required to buy it for one of our classes but if it wasn't mandatory, I wouldn't have wasted my $100. Go with Lippincott's The Point - I've heard way better things and you get access for 6 months for like $175...

This Book Needs A Warning Label

Although the Longman iBT TOEFL preparation book is generally well done, its main feature is one of the most deceptive sales practices I have ever seen in a textbook.

When you buy the book,it comes with a well done CD-ROM (although it was defective in two out of five of my student's book packages) and notes rather casually on Page xiii: "The recording program that can be purchased to accompany this book includes all the recorded materials from the Listening, Writing and Speaking sections and the Mini-Tests and Complete Tests."

In Clearspeak: In order for the textbook to be used in three of the four exam sections (Reading excepted), you have to buy a set of eight Audio CDs or cassettes which cost more than the book/ CD-ROM combo! In other words, when purchased, the book is essentially useless (The CD-ROM has separate material and can be used as a stand-alone,)

In Switzerland, we pay $75.00 for the book and then have to pay another $86.00 to use it! I cite Longman in my business English classes as a perfect example of odious business practice. I and my students were outraged when we discovered this little game.

don't buy it

It's a waste of money and time. You can only use the reading section of the book. For the listening part, for example, the book contains only the questions, but not the conversations related to them, so the questions are not usable. To use the other sections in the book, you need another audio series which is NOT available in the market. Also the audio series you need is NOT mentioned buy the publisher. They give a cd with the book but it doesn't match with any section in the book, so many sections in the book are not usable. I tried to contact the publisher but they didn't even respond. As a result, this book is waste of money.

Case studies on Liberia, Bosnia, Somalia, Rwanda, Afghanistan and Iraq explain how legitimacy related to the outcome of these operations.

Encouraging

I found this book very encouraging in living everyday Christian lives. Ruth, Miriam, Flossy and Eureka have returned home from Chautauqua to live out their new lives as newborn believers. They find out that it isn't as easy as they thought. The story takes some interesting and surprising twists. The story drags a little, but the girls discuss such topics such as dancing, card-playing, etc. I highly recommend this book, but it is not really a romance novel.

my main source of words for the GRE

I recently took the revised GRE and scored in the 85th percentile on the verbal section (much to my surprise I might add). I used both the Manhattans 500 Essential Words Flash Cards 500 Essential Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards as well as the Manhattan 500 Advanced Words Flash Cards 500 Advanced Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards. After making it through both of these sets of flash cards, I felt like I had a fairly good vocabulary for the GRE and did see many of these words on the test.

With this noted, if you do have additional time after finishing these two sets of flash cards, I **HIGHLY RECOMMEND** that you learn the 300 or so most common root words for the GRE as well. Root words are very helpful in deciphering words that you don't know that will come up on the GRE. I found Barron's Essential Words for the GRE book Essential Words for the GRE (Barron's GRE) to be a good source for this, although I'm sure you can find these same root words in the Kaplan or related books as well. And while 300 root words seems like a lot of words to learn, you will probably know some/many of these words already, so fear not! There doesn't seem to be a good set of root word flash cards out there, so I ended up making my own, which was fine. One last note about learning root words: they will also help to strengthen and reinforce the vocab words you already know or are learning from both sets of the Manhattan cards. Learn your root words!

If you need help with reading comprehension and verbal practice problems, I used several different books. Here is my preferred list of books, in order:

Kaplan New GRE Verbal Workbook
New GRE Verbal Workbook (Kaplan GRE)
While I usually don't like Kaplan as a company (and I have not used any of their other books), I *would* highly recommend using their verbal workbook as there seems to be a good amount of practice problems and they seem similar to what you might see on the GRE.

Secondly, I did use the Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook and while I found it useful for it's large amount of practice problems, I found some of the vocab words used as answers were less common that what I saw either on the GRE or on other practice problems and practice tests. With this noted, I still recommend using this book.

Finally, I did use Manhattan's Reading Comprehension and Essay GRE Strategy Book as well. Reading Comprehension & Essays GRE Strategy Guide, 3rd Edition (Manhattan Prep Strategy Guides). The best thing I got from this book is learning how to take brief notes while reading over the reading passages on the GRE. Taking notes helps to reinforce what you are reading, a technique not talked about very often by other books. The practice problems in this book are decent, but nothing above that. I do wish they could have put more practice problems in this book (like the Kaplan Verbal Workbook), but there is still useful content here. If you are struggling with the analytical writing section, there are some good tips on this section as well.

One final note about both practicing your verbal, but also your math/quantitative: do as many practice tests as you can!!! When you purchase a book (any book I believe) from Manhattan, you get an access code to 6 full length online practice tests. I found these practice tests VERY VERY USEFUL for getting comfortable with the GRE format but also applying all of the verbal and math skills I was practicing. Most of the questions are very similar in difficulty to what you will see and you can review your questions as well. By the way, always review problems you get wrong, this is really important! For Kaplan, you have to purchase the Kaplan Premiere GRE review book to get the disc with access to 10 verbal practice tests and 10 quantitative practice tests. Like the Manhattan, I found these practice tests VERY VERY useful. Do yourself a favor, and get access to both the Manhattan and the Kaplan practice tests It will help immensely!

Very Impressive Flashcard Set

I teach standardized tests full time and recommend these vocabulary flash cards to my students over all others. They're well put-together, both in terms of their physical qualities and durability, and the content therein. Coupled with the 500 Essential Words box set, it's one of the best investments to make for GRE studies.

My only contention with the list is that, every so often, Manhattan seems to get a bit lazy with etymologies. I remember a few words that begin with "de-" where the prefix "de-" emphasizes a definition rather than giving its opposite. An example is the word "delimit", which means "to set boundaries." Rather than explaining that the "de-" is a root from Latinate languages, they just shrug it off and say "this prefix doesn't seem to do much", but it's a very common trait in English phrasings, as in the words "definite", "demarcate", "delineate", and so on, where the "de-" prefix is actually reinforcing an idea.

Product is good, but be careful some cards maybe doubled and some are missing.

The product itself is very good. But the one I bought has an obvious problem. The words start with A,B are missing, the words start with C,D are doubled, and since I bought both essential and advanced words, after I finish the essential one, it's too late to return this one....
