Shit just got real, and if they want to survive, these four friends are going to have to tap into some baser instincts they didn't even know existed in their fast-food and pizza delivery world. An enjoyable read for gamers

In Robert Bevan's "Critical Failures," a group of gamers find that their game has become all too real. Bevan uses this as a vehicle for action, adventure, and comedy, particularly when it comes to lampooning some of the rules we all know and love from Dungeons and Dragons (think of the type of humor you see in Order of the Stick).
While reading this book, I laughed out loud in more than a few places. The jokes and funny situations around the rules echo a lot of the things we joke about in my own gaming group. Even more, I recognized these characters from years of table-top roleplaying games. They are a lot of the people I sat across from.
The book is fun, and funny, and if you've been a gamer for any length of time you'll find that it often holds up a mirror in which you will see your own gaming groups. Further, the ending is not what I anticipated - and that's a good thing.
Check it out - it's worth the read.

Surpringingly Hilarious

First off, I have never played D&D, though I am a fan of the fantasy genre, and sort of know my way around the basic core tenets of the game. Nevertheless, I never felt lost, and this book had me laughing out loud on a regular basis, earning me several inquisitive looks from my family. Make no mistake, it's low-brow humor, silly, liberally peppered with trash talk, and the "your mom" meme starts to wear a bit thin, but is sometimes rather clever as well as delivered in a way that you know isn't really meant maliciously. It's not exactly politically correct and that's another thing I found endearing. These are just guys being guys, and they almost sound fun to be around -on a limited basis.
I haven't laughed this much from a book since I can remember.
There could be a little more character development, and a little more differentiation, (Dave and Tim may as well be the same person) but basically we all know a Cooper, who grew more likeable as the story progressed.
Last but not least, the kindle edition wasn't even a lousy buck, so it didn't even cost anything, really.

I am not into games but I laughed so hard! I added the narration and it was super!

Critical Failures (Caverns and Creatures Book 1) by Robert Bevan is so hilarious, and I am not a gamer! I bought the book and then decided to add the $2 for the audio narration so my son would listen to it, he doesn't like to read but I thought he would love this story because he is a big gamer. I started listening to it while I did things around the house but got so into the story, I just sat down and listened and giggled. Nothing got done, I just took my tablet to bed with me and I laid there listening to this crazy story and laughed and giggled till it was finished. I didn't really care nothing got done because I really enjoyed the story so much! Now to let my son use my tablet. I wasn't going to till I was finished! The story is about a group of friends that get a new game master, one they never met before, come over and run the game. They are jerks and they pay for it. They end up in the game as their characters. It is so funny. A must read for gamers or not!
