A reference book no professional herbalist can be without

As an avid reader (and writer) of books on herbal medicine, I have to say that Blumenthal, Goldberg, and Brinckmann's Herbal Medicine is simply the most authoritative reference for the use of Western herbs on the market today. Herbal Medicine--Expanded Commission E Monographs augments the "gold standard" of scientifically oriented herbal therapy, the Commission E Monographs, with histories, in-depth and comprehensive discussions of scientific research, color photos, and practical recommendations for the use of herbs in therapy, some of which are to be found in no other book. While the tone of the book is academic and the scientific complexity of the subject matter may scare away some potential readers, anyone who uses any of the herbs most commonly available in the USA today can profit by referring to this book.

Missing extremely important information

I am a clinical professor in a school of pharmacy and am admittedly biased toward traditional "western" medicine. However, any objective person would have to agree that there are major "gaps" in the information this book provides. In the section on St. John's wort, this book states that there are no known contraindications or drug interactions with St. John's wort. There are in fact serious drug interactions with this product, including anti-rejection drugs (resulting in at least one case of organ rejection in a renal transplant patient) and potentially fatal interactions with other anti-depressants (most importantly MAOIs). This book has extensive information on historical use of herbs, pharmacology and uses... but lacks important safety information. No clinician should use this book as his/her sole source of information on herbal products.

Great Book

The only lacking part is drawings or sketches explaining the tectonic of the design. I would have been great if each project is supported by design process followed with some detail drawings.

Innovative Tradition

The motto of Kengo Kuma's practice "is to recover the tradition of Japanese buildings and to reinterpret these traditions for the 21st century". But what sets his work apart from his Post-Modern predecessors, or his peer Japanese architects who shared a similar goal such as Hiroshi Naito or Terunobu Fujimori was he deemphasized formal expression, and instead, he focused meticulously on the intangibles of traditional Japanese architecture, such as layering of space, mentality of emptiness, the play of light and shadow, framing of views, and nature and its expression thru materiality. His most distinguished methodology of recreating the intangibles was through the manipulation of materials and their tectonics to produce phenomenal effects that rooted his designs to their time and places. His choices of materials were typically mixtures of modern (glass, metal, concrete, etc.…) with natural and often regional (straw, bamboo, wood, stone, plants, water, earth, etc...). Although most of his projects looked different from one another but the rigorous execution of details and unrestingly dialogues between traditional and contemporary made his architecture immediately recognizable.

The 320 volume by legendary Kenneth Frampton in collaboration with the architect is arguably the best Kengo Kuma monograph to date. Although I also place Botond Bognar’s Material Immaterial in high regard since it was the book that began my fascination of the architect’s work, but unfortunately, his more recent projects were not available at the time of publication in 2009. Material tectonic culture and critical regionalism are two of Frampton’s specialties, and that's how the contents structured. The book is not organized chronologically but thru materials from Water and Glass; Wood; Grass and Bamboo; and Stone, Earth, and Ceramics. The intangible qualities of Japanese architecture were not bounded by their geographical region but something universal to all his projects throughout the world. Is that a blessing or contradiction? I'm going to leave that thought to you.

A Horse Book That I Actually Liked

I never was much for horse books back when all my middle school peers were hooked on them. I found this book in the throw-away pile at my school and rescued it. It gave me something to do while my 7th-graders were taking their exams. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It personifies the horse from page one. It tells of his beginnings and overcoming prejudices from the racing community and even his owner and his surprise win at the Kentucky Derby.

Not the book I was trying to find , but brought back some Happy Reading memories.

This is a classic children's book and a true story ,kind of an ugly duckling story about a horse . It was a good lesson to keep trying when I was growing up.
The book I was trying to find, was about a young man ,recently released from prison , who helped out at a farm , did crayon drawings on the back of old wallpaper, and ended up entering an old wood chuck wagon race and winning with lots of hard work and perseverance .

A Wonderful Book

I read this true story of a horse with a heart to run. I read it as a young child & never forgot the lesson of heart, of not looking at just the outside, but it is what is inside that counts. It is a good lesson of life & love. I had this book for a long time and then lost it. But I found it again at Amazon. It is still a wonderful book about a true hero of life.

A Definitive History of the 1820s

Well deserving his Pulitzer, Dangerfield opens this fascinating study with the negotiations at Ghent and closes with the advent of the Jackson presidency. His erudite treatment of the complex political realities of the period reaveal that the prevailing feelings were anything but good. All this aside, _The Era of Good Feelings_ is probably not a choice fire-side text for the casual reader.

Brilliant Book on Neglected Period

George Dangerfield's "The Era of Good Feelings" is a wonderful book covering the often forgotten politics and events between the Jeffersonian era and the Jacksonian period. Dangerfield's vivid writing style and his gift at presenting the biographical sketch guides the reader along. From the heated discussions of the Monroe Cabinet to the skirmishing between churches in the field and their congregational headquarters to Andrew Jackson leading the invasion of Spanish Florida, Dangerfield captures a time of great growth and transition. Dangerfield is also excellent in showing how English politics and economics shaped the fledgling republic during these years. Dangerfield's takes on the leading political actors form a wonderful portrait gallery: the elusive James Monroe, the puritanical John Quincy Adams, the merry Henry Clay and raging John Randolph, the logical John Calhoun and the emotional Andrew Jackson. Dangerfield offers an excellent bridge between more established periods of American history and shows the importance of this neglected period.

About the Author

Thorsten Hens is a Swiss Finance Institute Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Zurich. He studied in Bonn and Paris and previously held positions in Stanford and Bielefeld.

Marc Oliver Rieger is a Professor for Banking and Finance at the University of Trier. He studied in Constance and obtained his Ph.D. from the MPI in Leipzig. Previously he held senior researcher positions in Z�rich at the ETH and the University, as well as in Carnegie Mellon, Pisa, Caltech, Bielefeld and Bonn.

Notational catastrophe and jungle of misleading concepts

At the first sight this book is full of formulas and derivations. At the second sight it's full of very clumsy mathematical notations - it doesn't know random variables, nor vector/matrix notations, rather it writes everything as sums. At the third sight it's full of typos. And with this you have already wasted a lot of time. Now you think let's read some texts of this book. It does offer some economic intuition, but concepts are not clearly defined, and the same words are used for different things. It's misleading, confusing and frustrating.
