With the eleventh edition of Ethics: Theory and Practice I wish to acknowledge the significant contributions made by all involved in the teaching of ethics courses who engage students with the core issues of our time.

The book is divided into eight chapters of ethical theory balanced by eight chapters of applied ethics. It also includes eight appendices. Ethics

I found this book a very interesting read. The most important aspect of the text is the wide ranging perceptions and ideologies of so many people in the world. I feel that as we try to understand the psychological make-up of the world and the decisions that we have made through the centuries then this id definitely the book to help assist in the review of the decisions that we have made.

The book was part of my ethics class and the class interaction with regards to the text was probably the most important part of the entire course. I would encourage all readers work through the questions and worksheets at the end of each chapter. It just helps clarify your thoughts and understanding of the work that is discussed in each chapter.

Whenever I study a text about ethics I expect to hear that religion should not be the only basis for having good moral or ethics. Thiroux and Krasemann were no exception While I disagree with this opinion the authors did make a case that all can and should have ethical training and that it should be in the home as a start but should also come from our educators. Well written. If you're religious don't be offended. I wasn't. The book was delivered on time and in good shape

The plan he finally comes up with involves murdering seven men very much like himself, and Westlake's most impressive achievement is to make the serial killings understandable if in no way justified. Fast moving & highly entertaining!

Burke Devore, a victim of corporate downsizing, has been out of work for two years. He had put in 25 years of loyal service in a specialized field, as a paper mill manager. After two years of job seeking, he has become desperate enough to commit murder. He conceives a plan to weed out the competition for the job he wants. He ends up stalking and killing a number of people who have better qualifications than he for his dream position. The premise could be believable, but I felt the author could have done more to develop the gradual loss of morality in his character. The reader never knows what kind of man Devore was before the downsizing. The story begins when Devore has already apparently suffered through two long years of agonizing disappointments. He has become a murderer in his mind at the time the book opens. Later into the book, the author does go back and fill in some of the missing development. He also shows how the numbing of Devore's values has affected his marriage and the way he handles the situation when his teenaged son gets in trouble for burglary. The book definitely had a message. I'm just not sure I liked the message. I didn't find Devore to be very likeable, which to me, was the weakness of the story. Nevertheless, I think it's a very well-done book, and I recommend it to those people who will look for a deeper meaning as well as those who will just read it as an adventure. I'd enjoy hearing from other readers, to discuss what you thought of Devore's character...

A MODERN DAY MORALITY TALE...

What do you do when you are over fifty years old, and the company for which you have worked for nearly a quarter of a century is downsizing and gives you the ax? One would think that you would simply get another job. Wrong! In this era of corporate downsizing and fierce competition, that may be easier said than done. Ask Burke Devore.
Burke Devore, unemployed now for nearly two years, would like nothing better than to get a job commensurate with his experience as a product manager for a paper mill corporation, but as I said, competition is fierce. Desperate in his quest for the american dream that seems to have turned into a nightmare from which he cannot wake, his middle class life is spiraling out of control. He must regain control by whatever means necessary. Burke Devore, thinking out of the box, simply decides to eliminate the competition...literally. Our erstwhile serial killer is mad as hell, and he isn't going to take it anymore.
This darkly satirical and provocative novel is a veritable page turner. Moreover, there is an underlying social commentary that permeates the plot, which serves to make the reader complicit with the protagonist, as he moves forward with his deadly agenda. Well written and original in concept, it makes for a book well worth reading, especially by those who enjoy mysteries and novels of suspense.

A very different Donald Westlake novel.....

As I started through this novel,I kept finding myself listening to the rational and sympatheituc justification for becoming a serial murderer and finding it somewhat compelling. Because the focus of the book, Burke Devore, a downsized paper mill production manager seems otherwise normal, even "someone like us", you become caught up in the madness and nearly find yourself tending to excuse it. Will there be a day of reckoning for the innocent lives so callously taken?? That my friends is one of the beauties of the book. It is unsettling reading...but it sure could happen. I hope Mr. Westlake will return to his previous style of writing, but he sure has proved his versatility.

very good intro to emerging financial markets

I used this book as a secondary book in an MBA class in international financial institutions. The students liked the book (not the price) and I enjoyed teaching from these very well edited teaching notes. Actually, teaching notes is not the right way to describe the book - as each well-researched and well-written chapter focuses on a very specific area. It was easy to integrate the material across different institutions books. Warmly recommended. Only suggestion: needs updating.

Excellent - where is an update?

This is an excellent book as noted by the other reviewer. It is well organized, well-written and does an excellent job of presenting the context of finance in an emerging market. Although some of the book is now starting to get a bit dated, I still use a few selected chapters in International Finance classes. If it were updated, I could use the whole text.

Santa Barbara Ceramic Design: Art Pottery from America's Riviera

I had wanted someone to write a book about this studio. However, the first thing that caught my attention was that there was no price guide. WHAT? An antiques book on an art studio and no price guide-unbelievable and unheard of. What good is a book today for antiquers whom the majority buy and sell for awhile. They need a price guide to at least have a place to start. I am certainly glad I did not pay $39.95+shipping & handling as most book companies and individuals wanted. I am definitely happy that I got the book much cheaper through Amazon. The photography was very nice and the writing factual and interesting.

Mr Lehmann, a closeted homosexual, is the target of a witch-hunt lead by the self-righteous and self-promoting, drama teacher, Mrs. Thalia Beaudelaire, who hopes to gain social prominence by threatening to ‘out’ him.

As a native of both that era and area, I was impressed with the spot on and yet skewed depiction of our slightly sclerotic heartland during that time period. A fun and entertaining out of the gate read from a new author and I look forward to more with anticipation.

An Inspiration Bible

I think this book should have a place in the library of any aspiring or seasoned entrepreneur. If you're demotivated, uninspired and/or discouraged, and you want to recharge your batteries or reconnect with your entrepreneurial spirit, then this is the book to read. However, if you're looking for a blueprint for entrepreneurial success, then in my opinion, you'll need another book in addition to this one.

it's all about the biggies...just so you know

I would have preferred more 'regular, ordinary' success stories....instead of the uber-gigantic multi million dollar ones.

It's not that I don't want millions...but I think the struggle to be happy....to be real to yourself....to have carved out something you can support your family with....and be happy doing it...that's worth a read - and very motivating to me.

The family dry cleaner - the life insurance agency - the mom and pop diner....those are my hero types (and my peers) that I could read about all day!

Great read for any soon to be or struggling entrepreneur

Jack Canfield has done it again with this book full of stories of from entrepreneurs that went from working from their kitchen table to billion dollar empires, many well known names in the business world today. When I feel discouraged and begin to wonder if things are ever going to get better - reading just one chapter can put that spark back into me and the seed of 'if they can do it, I can do it too' back in me. Highly recommended!!!

Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi?i (d. 204H/820AD) was the eponym of the Shafi?i school of legal thought, one of the four rites in Sunni Islam.

Joseph E. Lowry is Associate Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His books include Early Islamic Legal Theory: The Risala of Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafiʾi. His research and publications focus on the Qurʾan, Islamic law, and Arabic literature. Before becoming an academic he was an attorney in private practice in Washington, D.C.

This a contemporary translation of Imam Ash-Shafii's magnum opus, the "Risalah", which is very well done.
I have, earlier, read Majid Khadduri's translation of the "Risala", as well, which is more of a classical version of it.
Based on my experience, I think, for a layman like me, to get a good understanding of such a grand work of Islamic scholarship of the Classical Islamic period it would be more helpful to benefit from both translations, to get a more comprehensive understanding of the text.

Interesting and thought provoking for Lit nerds like me.

I was assigned this book for a graduate level English course, so I had to read it. Well, it turned out to be excellent! A lot of good reading here about American short story writers. The course doesn't start until tomorrow, but I have already finished the book. Good stuff!
