I applaud this series of textbooks. It is without a doubt the best method I have ever taught with, but the true nature of this post is regarding a request for help. Last week, the Testing booklets were stolen from our institution's french department. I have been informed by the administration that they have reordered, but that Yale Univesity press expects a delivery time in excess of three weeks. If anyone knows of any ways to acquire the examinations sooner, please drop me a line at DrRMROGAN@hotmail.com. I cannot put off this test any further and am in great need of assistance. (This is in regards to lessons 24 and 25, Testing forms "D" if by chance anyone does come across this).

About the Author
Timothy Snyder is the Levin Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin and Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning. Snyder is a member of the Committee on Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and a permanent fellow of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

Vital Advice from One Who Knows

This is a short, quick book to read, perhaps 30-45 minutes of your time. And at only $2.99 (on Kindle) you can't afford not to buy it. For those who found his list of 20 points elsewhere on the web for free, don't let that suffice. The book adds commentary to his list, and it's worth the small cost.

For those of you not acquainted with Snyder, he's a historian of Eastern Europe and has written extensively on the turmoil--the killing fields--of Eastern Europe in the 20th century. He knows whereof he speaks.

I will offer you a couple of his thoughts from his concluding remarks. In addressing what he terms "the politics of inevitability," he notes

Until recently, we Americans had convinced ourselves that there was nothing in the future but more of the same. The seemingly distant traumas of fascism, Nazism, and communism seemed to be receding into irrelevance. We allowed ourselves to accept the politics of inevitability, the sense that history could move in only one direction: toward liberal democracy. After communism in eastern Europe came to an end in 1989–91, we imbibed the myth of an “end of history.” In doing so, we lowered our defenses, constrained our imagination, and opened the way for precisely the kinds of regimes we told ourselves could never return.

But he then addresses the converse attitude, what he calls "the politics of eternity." About this attitude, he states
In the politics of eternity, the seduction by a mythicized past prevents us from thinking about possible futures. The habit of dwelling on victimhood dulls the impulse of self-correction. Since the nation is defined by its inherent virtue rather than by its future potential, politics becomes a discussion of good and evil rather than a discussion of possible solutions to real problems. Since the crisis is permanent, the sense of emergency is always present; planning for the future seems impossible or even disloyal. How can we even think of reform when the enemy is always at the gate?

In contrast to both of these attitudes, he places history (an encomium with which I could not agree more):
Both of these positions, inevitability and eternity, are antihistorical. The only thing that stands between them is history itself. History allows us to see patterns and make judgments. It sketches for us the structures within which we can seek freedom. It reveals moments, each one of them different, none entirely unique. To understand one moment is to see the possibility of being the cocreator of another. History permits us to be responsible: not for everything, but for something. The Polish poet Czesław Miłosz thought that such a notion of responsibility worked against loneliness and indifference. History gives us the company of those who have done and suffered more than we have.

In his peroration, he exhorts young people especially (although it applies to all of us)

One thing is certain: If young people do not begin to make history, politicians of eternity and inevitability will destroy it. And to make history, young Americans will have to know some.

This is not the end, but a beginning. “The time is out of joint. O cursed spite,/That ever I was born to set it right!” Thus Hamlet. Yet he concludes: “Nay, come, let’s go together.”

Vital and Timely

Shatters any illusion that democracy is a given in the US or in any country. One detail I keep thinking about: Snyder's argument that the evisceration of privacy and the humiliation of the individual is a very old fascist technique. Consider that when you think about the email breaches of the last election, or why doxing is a weapon of choice among the cyber brown shirts. Another: the long and terrible legacy of dismantling the rule and protections of law as "exceptions" -- which quickly become permanent -- due to safety "emergencies." Americans may be tested on that sooner than later. Democracy has and can become totalitarianism in but a few months. The time to stand up for institutions, fair voting, and (this is surprisingly crucial) the ethics of your profession is NOW -- not after it's too late.

Essential reading for our time

I have no doubt “On Tyranny” is a book Tim Snyder wished he didn’t have to write, in the same way, as he reminds us, that Hamlet was fated to “set things right”. No one knows the history of 20th century Germany, eastern Europe, and Russia better than prof. Snyder. He has accomplished immense scholarship in those countries and shared some of it in “Bloodlands”, “Black Earth”, scholarly papers and commentaries over the years. In measured prose, he imbues his history with the existential anguish of its victims and imparts the cold-blooded nature of the perpetrators. He quietly relates how individuals and societies have weaseled out of bearing responsibility. Personal, familial, and cultural tragedies seep into his writing and it has brought me to tears many times.
Prof. Snyder knows a lot more about how tyranny takes hold and uses chance opportunity to impose itself than he can tell in a thousand or ten thousand pages. Reading his work, you can tell that the years of close reading have affected his core. Furthermore, he is very active in the contemporary eastern European culture, where recent years have not been kind to Liberal Democracy.
Now, suddenly, authoritarian intolerance and anti-democratic forces are openly and aggressively imposing themselves here in the US. Clearly, he is compelled to share cautionary lessons for Enlightenment-loving, Constitution-embracing, and liberal democratic citizens of his own country… and that would be us. We, who are so unprepared to face our threat, who are traumatized and ill-equipped to recognize and react to repression have ask ourselves: “what is to be done, how can we endure this, maintain our self-respect, and resist?”
In “On Tyranny”, prof. Snyder has distilled the life lessons of those countless courageous people who faced tyranny and he implies how countless more have shriveled and looked away from the horror they felt coming. This book will aide you to surf your fear and panic well enough to dispassionately lay out how authoritarian politics can modify your behavior and how to be mindful in resisting these changes. Lesson number 1 is about how a person caves into tyranny: “…individuals think ahead what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.”
Fortunately, the other 19 lessons truly instruct and remind the reader about options to resist letting tyranny dominate your life. I will leave those lessons for you when you read the book.
Prof. Snyder’s epilogue offers brilliant insight into the fallacies that predominate in our contemporary culture that brought us to this crisis.
This is a very serious book and needs to be read a few times and shared with as many people as you can reach. It’s an inexpensive book and I recommend buying several copies and handing them out to people who need to read it. It’s a small investment for your survival as a member of a civilized and compassionate society.

Rick Bayless (host of the PBS-TV series Cooking Mexican extensively explores Mexican cookery, analyzing particular national characteristics as well as regional variations of the complex cuisine. He traces the history of Mexican food from the humble squash and beans of thousands of years ago to a cuisine that came to include chiles, corn and the orchard bounties (coconut, pineapple, avocados) of the conquering Spanish. Mexican dishes familiar to Americansthe enchiladas, tamales and tacos that are more properly classified with North American Southwestern cookingare included, but the most interesting recipes are the more exotic: Native American-influenced, spice-sweetened food from the Oaxaca region and simple, European-influenced seafood and vegetable dishes of the Gulf states. The author explains how common flavors (tomatoes, chiles, coriander, lime, onion, garlic) are transformed by proportion and cooking method to produce the regional differences. Guacamole with Tomatillos (Guacamole de Tomate Verde) Yield: about 2 cups

Ingredients

8 ounces (5 or 6 medium) fresh tomatillos, husked and washed drained or one 13-ounce can tomatillos, drained
Fresh hot green chiles to taste (roughly 2 chiles serranos or 1 chile jalapeno), stemmed, seeded and roughly chopped
4 sprigs fresh coriander (cilantro), roughly chopped
1/2 small onion, roughly chopped
1 ripe, medium-large avocado
Salt, about 1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

1. The tomatillos. Boil the fresh tomatillos in salted water to cover until just soft through, about 10 minutes; drain and place in a blender jar or food processor. Canned tomatillos need only be drained and put in the blender or food processor.

2. The puree. Add the chile, coriander and onion to the tomatillos (and stir, if using a blender). Blend or process to a coarse puree.

3. The avocado. Halve the avocado lengthwise by cutting from stem to flower ends around the pit. Twist the halves apart, then scoop out the pit and reserve it. Scrape the avocado pulp from the skin and place in a mixing bowl.

4. Finishing the sauce. Mash the avocado until smooth, using a fork or your hand. Scrape in the tomatillo puree and mix well. Season with salt, return the pit to the sauce and cover well. Let stand a few minutes to blend the flavors, then serve.

Timing and Advance Preparation

This guacamole takes about 20 minutes to prepare and, because of the acid in the tomatillos, will keep well without browning; but while the looks may stay, the flavor diminishes after a couple of hours.

Shrimp with Lime Dressing and Crunchy Vegetables (Camarones a la Vinagreta)
Yield: about 3 cups, enough for 12 tacos, serving 4 as a light main course

The refreshing simplicity of this soft taco filling, based on a recipe given to me by a Yucatecan taqueria cook, makes it a perfect complement to some of the richer fillings. Also, it's a delicious first course, hors d'oeuvre or picnic offering. With warm tortillas or good bread and a creamy potato salad, it makes a very good summer supper.

Ingredients

For the shrimp:
1 lime, halved
1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns, very coarsely ground
1/4 teaspoon allspice berries, very coarsely ground
3 bay leaves
12 ounces good-quality shrimp, left in their shells

For completing the dish:
1/2 small red onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice
1 ripe, medium-small tomato, cored and cut into 1/4-inch dice
5 radishes, finely diced
1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander (cilantro)
2 1/2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
5 tablespoons vegetable oil, preferably half olive oil and half vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 or 3 leaves romaine or leaf lettuce, for garnish
Sprigs of coriander (cilantro) or radish roses, for garnish

Instructions

1. The shrimp. Squeeze the two lime halves into a medium-size saucepan, then add the two squeezed rinds, the black pepper, allspice, bay leaves and 1 quart water. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 10 minutes.

Raise the heat to high, add the shrimp, re-cover and let the liquid return to a full boil. Immediately remove the pan from the heat, hold the lid slightly askew and strain off all the liquid. Re-cover tightly, set aside for 15 minutes, then rinse the shrimp under cold water to stop the cooking.

Peel the shrimp, then devein them by running a knife down the back to expose the dark intestinal track and scraping it out. If the shrimp are medium or larger, cut them into 1/2-inch bits, place in a bowl.

2. Other preliminaries. Add the red onion, tomato, radish and coriander to the shrimp. In a small bowl or a Jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine the lime juice, oil and salt.

3. Combining and serving. Shortly before serving, mix the dressing ingredients thoroughly, then pour over the shrimp mixture. Toss to coat everything well, cover, and refrigerate or set aside at room temperature.

Line a shallow serving bowl with the lettuce leaves. Taste the shrimp mixture for salt, scoop it into the prepared bowl and serve, garnished with sprigs of coriander or radish roses.

Timing and Advance Preparation

Preparation time is about 1 3/4 hours, most of which is devoted to the shrimp quietly marinating. The shrimp and vegetables can be prepared early in the day: Refrigerate separately, well covered. Dress the salad up to 1 hour before serving.

This is The Real Thing.

I am of Mexican descent. I have avoided Restaurants and cookbooks that try to pass themselves off as "Mexican", for years. The recipes in this Tome so remind me of my childhood, that the book is falling apart. Rick truly knows his subject. Any one seriously interested in the cuisine must seek out this book.

An Excellent Authentic Mexican Cookbook

I live in Southern California surrounded by countless Mexican Restaurants of all levels of quality. Sadly most are sub par greasy cheese and dry rice joints. The recipes I have prepared in this book make the countless combo-number-whatever's pale in comparison. The author explains the reasons for this in the books beginning introduction.

What consistently jumps at me in this book is the author's passion for Mexican cuisine. He hits at the heart of the real Mexican food culture and makes a clear distinction between Mexican "street food" (the informal more popular dishes prevalent across the US) and the traditional, authentic dishes of various regions in Mexico. There is a reason why the latter is not as popular in the US... it takes a lot of time and energy to create the elaborate authentic dishes. You need to find a restaurant that cares about quality dishes AND can pull it off in mass quantity... or you can make it yourself with some help from this book.

The author also puts the real star ingredient at the forefront of these traditional delights - Chiles. Chiles of all shapes, sizes and levels of spiciness can be found in many of the recipes. These different dried and fresh chilies complete the complexity of the recipes and should not be substituted... if they aren't available where you live and you want to do it right then find a way... order it online!

My favorite section has to be the Moles (pronounced like Mo-lay, not like the small mammal or skin growth). I love the history provided at the beginning of this chapter. I have personally made the Mole Verde and Mole Rojo multiple times. I have made the Mole Poblano only once... it takes about 6 hours... very good and worth it once in a while. If you want a mole that appeals to a wide range of palates then the Mole Verde is the way to go. This book is definitely not a be all end all for authentic Mexican cuisine but it definitely is an essential book for those people who are passionate about good authentic Mexican dishes... or simply food in general.

Extremely pleased with this book...

As a Mexican, I was actually a bit skeptical about this book - I mean a white guy writing about Mexican cooking? Come on! I am very happy to say that Rick Bayless proved me wrong. He knows his stuff. I've tried several of his recipes, including the green and poblano moles, the corn-husk wrapped fish in adobo [slightly spicy barbeque-ish seasoning paste], pozole [pork and hominy soup], and a few side dishes. None of the dishes have disappointed. Quite the opposite, the result is always quite good. The flavors are authentic and remind me of the dishes prepared by my mom, aunts and grandmothers. Yes, some of the dishes - the poblano mole in particular - are a bit time consuming, but well worth the effort, and even better than my mom's [sorry, mom!]. Not all the recipes are high maintenance though, and there are some wonderful dishes that can be prepared with minimal effort. This book is not for those looking to make a ground beef burrito, but if you love the taste of authentic Mexican food and are willing to invest a little bit of time, you are in for a treat. Mr. Bayless starts out with salsas and basic seasoning sauces and pastes, then moves on to heartier dishes, some of them involving those same salsas, sauces and pastes, so there is some cross-referencing between recipes. I previously read reviews where some people thought that was too much work, but I didn't mind flipping back to a previous page for a home-made sauce that was part of another recipe. He has side notes and tips on a lot of the recipes that help the person making the dish stay on track to a tasty end result, and in some cases with hard to find ingredients, he offers alternatives that are just as good. He has a comprehensive index of Mexican ingredients used for the dishes in the book, with brief history and descriptions of the ingredients. One drawback though, is that there are no color pictures of these ingredients. Color pictures, not the pencil drawings, would be a great help, because if you are not familiar with the ingredients it can be a bit frustrating trying to get a handle on the foods by description alone.

Overall though, the book is excellent. I am quite pleased with it and find myself browsing through it, reading the recipes, my mouth watering at the thought of how dish I want to make is going to smell, look, and taste. I enjoy cooking but by no means am a chef, however I can fool my family and friends into thinking I am with help from Rick Bayless.

"River God" and "The 7th Scroll" are two of my all time favorite books. I used to really look forward to ...

I have been a huge fan of Wilbur Smith since reading "The Sunbird" nearly 40 years ago. "River God" and "The 7th Scroll" are two of my all time favorite books. I used to really look forward to anything new from this author; but this book, coupled with his last effort ("Desert God"), are just terrible. The plot is ridiculous, details are ridiculous, dialogue (such as it is; most of the book is narration) is ridiculous; continuity with his earlier books is non-existent (there are too many conflicts between previous stories to mention; not the least of which, Pharaoh Tamose was killed by the Hyksos, in Smith's 3rd Egypt book, and eventually succeeded by his son Nefer Seti; now, in Pharaoh, he's killed again, under different circumstances, and succeeded by a totally different set of sons. My guess, which many other reviewers have already mentioned, is that Mr. Smith isn't writing anymore; he just drafts rough story outlines, and gets some hack (probably paid by the word) to flesh them out. Very disappointing, and it does a dis-service to his legacy; anyone reading these as their first introduction to Wilbur Smith would be justified in never picking up another book by him again. They would never know how great his story-telling used to be. Just Sad. Again, River God and 7th Scroll are fantastic reads; Warlock is silly, but fun; The Quest is a weird, disappointing, disjointed collection of metaphysical glop, but at least it reads like a story; Desert God & Pharaoh are pure garbage. I want my $22 back.

I have been a fan of Smith for all of my life. He was a master of the story-teller's art with twisting and turning plots. Books that one had difficulty in putting down.
This us such a puerile story that question ,how much of a hand, if any, Mr Smith had in its development.

A GOOD REVIEW OF MOST OF THE BASICS

This is a good book for those involved in engine testing for the first time, particularly those operating (rather than creating) the facilities and less experienced engineers using the data.
There are a few typos (see below) but the content is all sound and there are some interesting dips into theory in order to help understanding of the tests and measurements.
Readers may care to note:
* the author is a leading regional member of the Institution (not Institute) of Mechanical Engineers, the professional society for most mechanical and automotive engineers in the UK.
* many photos are included courtesy of Froude Hofmann (not Hoffman)
* in the glossary, CVD should read CVS (Constant Volume Sampler)

The book is quite a large format, being 226 x 222 mm and weighing 1.1 kg; not one to carry around in your briefcase for long but a valuable reference to have on the shelf. The large size means that the font sizes are generous and there are plenty of illustrations, both drawn and photographs.

As one of the endorsers of the book

Ok, I'm on the cover of this book, so I'm a little jaded. But if you are familiar with the ACL community, then you know my name. I am one of the best known ACL users in the world... and have spoken at two of ACL's annual conferences.

That being said, I fully endorse this book. While it won't teach you the basics, this book will help you learn how to write scripts. I can honestly say that without the earlier version of this book, I would not be where I am today. The book showed me what the next level of programming looked like.

I can also say that after 6 years of participation on the ACL user forum that the people who have read this book have become some of the best contributers on the forum. There are some, such as GVG who started out as weak contributors and then read this book. Today GVG is one of the best ACL users in the world.

The whole purpose of my purchase of this book was ...

The whole purpose of my purchase of this book was to get the CD which supposedly had the ACL version 9 educational version on it. The book shipped to me didn't have the CD and Wiley's book support web site didn't have it either. The book support site did have all of the data files, that wasn't as problem. My problem is I don't have access to ACL itself and purchasing this book was going to be my work around that.

Don't expect to learn ACL, that's another book

Do not buy this thinking it will help you learn ACL, it's geared towards those already familiar with the program who want to add enrich their skills, not for those looking to learn a new skill set.

One of the best books on teens

Karen Sternheimer has followed up her excellent "It's Not the Media" with another highly readable, incisive work that demolishes the rampant myths about teens today. In a time of terrible, misleading, distortion-packed anti-youth books flooding bookshelves, Sternheimer consistently uses logical analysis and vivid examples that treat teenagers not as some alien scourge, but with the respect and fairness that we would expect for our own adult groups in society. As a former teacher, I recommend this book not just for good reading and information, but as a scholarly text in courses on youth, sociology, psychology, media analysis, critical thinking, and related fields.
