"[WCIV is] an accessible and clearly written, well organized textbook that does a great job integrating primary source documents and internet resources.... I would feel confident that my students could get the necessary information out of the text and that it would support and reinforce my class lectures."

"[WCIV] truly meets the needs of college and university students. Very well balanced, strong and accurate content, supplements well integrated into the text, a great focus on critical thinking, and outstanding design, layout, color, and maps."

"WCIV has several important items that make it a very desirable text; among those are the Learning Objectives, defining key terms, responses given to students about the Learning Objectives--not to mention the concise, methodical approach to delivering the subject matter in a non-chronological model."

Easy to read & understand
By Julie
I purchased this textbook for my Western Civilizations II course. I thought this was a great textbook because it was not overly detailed, but provided enough information to increase my understanding of the subject. There were lots of visuals throughtout the book, which I found aided my learning. The maps were particularly helpful, as were the period photos. The text itself was presented in a simple, two-column format, with clearly defined headers and sub-headers for each section. The book featured text boxes with important terms and definitions, which was particularly helpful as I studied for my exams.

This textbook came with online access to CourseMate, but I did not use that feature and cannot review that aspect of the textbook.

Excellent read!
By Dr. Chips
We're using this book for our world civ 1 & 2 classes at WSCC. It looks like it would be busy and a little sophomoric in its design but nothing could be further from the truth. The material is well written and concise and the cengage packet that comes along with the new versions of the textbook are amazingly detailed and well thought out; in addition to being great study aids. Great textbook for the class.

I Put The Pepper In The Pepper Pot!
By A Customer
The story
This book is set around a farming family, Papa Joe, Mama Sue, Sam, Toby and Jane. One day they learned that rich Aunt Tootie was coming for dinner so the family set out to clean up the house, the yard, do the laundry but most importantly, first start to make the stew. "We may be poor said Mama Sue. But we can cook up a hearty stew as good as Tooties ever tasted."
While the family was doing the chores and the stew was cooking, Mama Sue remembered it needed some pepper. One by one she asked each family member to add a pinch of pepper, but each one was busy with his or her chores.
However, as each one finished a chore, he or she went in and put in a pinch of pepper. Of course, Mama Sue didn't know that so when she was done with her chores she added 4 pinches to make it "hearty."
Aunt Tootie came and was given the best chair and the plate without the crack and waited for her to taste what they thought would be a delicious stew. Of course it wasn't and in the way of "Who put the cookie in the cookie jar?" She asked, "Who put the pepper in the pot?" and of course each one answered "I put the pepper in the pot!"
Everyone got a good laugh out of it once they realized what had happened and much to the family's surprise Aunt Tootie offered to make an omelet - luckily there was no more pepper in the house!
The illustrations:
The pictures are colorful and adorable. There is a lot going on in each picture showing what the family is doing. We see each family member doing their chores and putting in pinches of pepper. The pictures are simple but detailed at the same time. They are the kind of pictures that children want to look at for a long time taking in each thing they see.
What the children thought:
I read this book to first graders primarily and they love it. Do you like to hear children laugh. This book will make them laugh and giggle. It is really very cute and very funny. It is a good starting to read book with simple words such as pot, water, chores, clothes, and clean.
To make a lesson out of it, we talk about the chores they do around the house and that usually begins a whole discussion of chores!
But Wait There is more to this book:
1. There are 2 pages on "Food Funnies" with questions like "What do you call a chicken from outer space?" The answer: An eggs-traterrestrial. The children love doing these riddles and end up thinking up their own, of course.
2. There are 4 excellent pages on "Safety rules for kids in the kitchen." The children are taught what to do before they start cooking, while they are cooking, what to do when they finish cooking, and important things to remember.
This chapter is an excellent way to end a funny book. It is a serious discussion, but the children don't mind. They enjoy sharing what they know about kitchen safety and how they help in the kitchen - what they can and cannot do. I often have them sit in a circle and go around the room talking about kitchen safety if they want.
3. The last chapter is The Usborne Round the World Cookbook with a recipe from Latin America, Japan and India. They are simple recipes that young children can help you make and for the children on the older end of the age range, with supervision, they can make a Cucumber raita themselves.
My thoughts:
I really like this book and would have it in my house if my children were small. It is a book that you can read over and over again as well as having practical information in it.

Delightful!
By DeeDee Fox
What a delightful story about a family and their many preparations for an aunt who is coming to visit! The family joins together in their efforts to make everything perfect for their special visitor. When the mother is too busy to do it herself, she asks her family, one person at a time, to add some pepper to the pot of stew. When each of them say they can't, she asks yet another to put pepper in the stew. Eventually, when they each find the time, the all add a little pepper, some more than others. Unbeknownst to each other, they have inadvertantly added so much pepper that the stew is rendered inedible. The family all has a good laugh over it, and Aunt Tootie offers to make her famous omelettes for dinner. When she asks for the pepper so she can add it to her omelettes, everyone gets a good laugh, because they realize they are all out of pepper.

This book is skillfully written with delightful illustrations. - Bravo!

Pepper Everywhere!
By A Customer
When I was younger, I loved this book! My parents at bedtime had to hide it from me, so I would not turn on the light and begin to read it again! It was one of my first books I learned to read. I still have it and I enjoy reading it now to my two year old brother. Who Put the Pepper In The Pot? Is a great classic in my family, and a great beginner book.

An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science (Cambridge Introductions to Philosophy), by Kent W. Staley

This book guides readers by gradual steps through the central concepts and debates in the philosophy of science. Using concrete examples from the history of science, Kent W. Staley shows how seemingly abstract philosophical issues are relevant to important aspects of scientific practice. Structured in two parts, the book first tackles the central concepts of the philosophy of science, such as the problem of induction, falsificationism, and underdetermination, and important figures and movements, such as the logical empiricists, Thomas Kuhn, and Paul Feyerabend. The second part turns to contemporary debates in the philosophy of science, such as scientific realism, explanation, the role of values in science, the different views of scientific inference, and probability. This broad yet detailed overview will give readers a strong grounding whilst also providing opportunities for further exploration. It will be of particular interest to students of philosophy, the philosophy of science, and science.

Black Panther

Black Panther reinvented as a sharp and witty political satire? Believe it! T'Challa is the man with the plan, as Christopher Priest puts the emphasis on the Wakandan king's reputation as the ultimate statesman, as seen through the eyes of the U.S. government's Everett K. Ross. As the Panther investigates a murder in New York, Ross plays Devil's Advocate in an encounter with Mephisto, and a new regime seizes control in Wakanda.

Benchmark for Modern Day Black Panther Stories
By Anarchy in the US
When a Marvel character is announced for the big screen, you know an incoming of new printings is inbound to be published. With his first appearance next year in Captain America: Civil War and his own film in 2017, Black Panther is a character long over due for the spot light. Which, you would think being the first African American superhero in comics would get you more respect than some other characters since appearing in 1966.

So goes with a quick recap: T'Challa, AKA Black Panther ; King of Wakanda, an African nation with some of the most wealthiest and advanced technology in the world thanks to it being the location of vibranium, one of the most sought after minerals in existence. Black Panther is super hero for the Avengers and leader/monarch figurehead to the Wakandan people. Now that means there have been numerous interpretations of the character throughout the years, but it wasn’t until the character was relaunched in 1998 series under black writer Christopher Priest where he became the modern day version everyone uses now. And yes, it’s a pleasant offering for new and old readers on Black Panther.

Collecting issues #1-17 (, BLACK PANTHER BY CHRISTOPHER PRIEST VOL.1 COMPLETE COLLECTION shows T'Challa comes to America to investigate the kidnapping and murder of a little girl who was affiliated with a Wakandian charity group. Tensions are high for Wakanda having a civil war back home, but T’Challa feels he needs to investigate this himself even with problems in his home land. So T’Challa brings his own entourage of body guards including Zuri, a hulk-like fighter and two teenage assassin’s named the Dora Milhje, with government agent Everett K. Ross is assigned as an escort to assist and keep relations with Wakanda. He figured it would be easy work and just tailed along with the King's entourage. But things go crazy quickly as Black Panther has been setup, his home country been taken over from his absence, and the lord of Hell, Mephisto, has something to do with all of it.

Various versions of Panther existed before Priest took control like the 70’s being very serious and reflective, to Jack Kirby being over the top. Priest reverts Panther more akin to Stan Lee’s original version being able to outsmart the likes of Reed Richards (who is one of the smartest characters in the Marvel Universe) and go toe-to-toe with The Thing, while adding a some of his past versions as to no alter the character’s rich history. This makes Priest work on Panther parts urban vigilante, political thriller, and even satire.

The first twelve issues are one tightly woven story of Black Panther dealing with the kidnapping case and reclaiming Wakanda, while issues #13 through #17 are single/two issue tales of Panther teaming up with various Marvel characters that are quite amusing to see the interaction with. This is made up for the narration of the stories by Everett K. Ross, who speaks through his observations in a highly comical and witty method to his superiors (for example he loses his pants in front of Mephisto and by accidently selling his soul for pants, he just keeps unzipping his pants to have another pair on). He’s a coward and a bit dumb, as well as explains his stories in a non-linear narrative akin to the Quentin Tarantino film, Pulp Fiction (which even his superior mentions this). So while Ross is the comedic relief and narrator, Black Panther or “the Client” as Ross says, is the straight man with very little to say. It’s a great way to counter balance the vibe for readers.

And because Panther is the straight man, Priest makes Panther very much like DC’s Batman in his abilities and gadgets, his overall look, and insane strategist skills in keeping 10-steps ahead of everyone, so much so that he admits to joining the Avengers just so he can keep an eye on them if they were a threat to Wakanda . Even his new villain Achebe, looks and acts an awful lot like DC’s Joker with a large grinning smile and crazy habits. This Batman-esque Black Panther has become the standard for modern day writers to inhabit that makes this a worthwhile read, being more about using his smarts and being open to the world.

The art supplied from the first 5 issues is Mark Texeira, Vince Evans doing the second story arc with Joe Jusko and Mike Manley, with Sal Velluto doing the rest. The art is great that ranges from gritty to comical (like issue #8 having an ode to Stan Lee/Jack Kirby flashback sequence). It’s overall good stuff. With the addition of the Marvel Knights Sketchbook extras that give numerous drawings and interviews to Priest on the character that are worth reading.

Now I know my Amazon rating is 5 stars, but I’m scoring it around 4 stars. The only problems I had were the storytelling method Priest uses like Pulp Fiction is confusing at first. In fact, it’s used predominantly throughout his whole run on Black Panther. It does ease up in later issues, but the shifting story might not jive well with some readers. And the second aspect might be the racism aspect some readers might get. What I mean by this is the dichotomy between Ross and Panther that some sources have pointed out throughout the years. Ross is the bumbling white guy who gets chased down the White House by the Present of the United States while Black Panther is the cool-headed, rich super hero. I personally didn’t get that vibe, as well as Priest himself not portraying dumb ethnicities. He even goes so far as to have a few scenes where black characters try to sway Panther into a symbol for African Americans, which Panther shoots this down and looks at all lives, regardless of skin color, being vital to life. But I just wanted to point that out if any new readers get that feeling. And the notion of Black Panther being a Batman-like clone might gel well either (even if both characters have different upbringings and motives).

Still, I’m glad Marvel decided to reprint these fine stories. They are exciting, funny, and even insightful to still read about and make Black Panther stand out from the other characters. It was ground-breaking stuff back in the day, which you can see why he has become a powerful figure in modern Marvel comics thanks to Priest work on the character. Well with Black Panther making his film debut next year, this is the first collection to be released to lead up to next year. The first two trades (Black Panther Vol. 1: The Client and Black Panther: Enemy Of The State TPB) are out of print and pricey, with much of Priest work uncollected before. So with writing a whopping 62-issues, there is plenty of Black Panther material on the way.

An Important Collection for A Thoroughly Important Character
By RoB
Not much that I can add to this list of reviews that hasn't already been said. Except for explaining the Title of this review. I've been labeled Peter Pan by coworkers because of my growing collection of graphic novels & comics...a medium of storytelling I couldn't afford as a little boy in the Caribbean but can spend "vast" amounts of money on now as an adult. In my 33 years of life & 27 years of reading I'd never come across a character as important (to me) as T'Challa: a dark-skinned super-hero who's a KING, noble, powerful, cunning and (according to many of the female characters herein) sexy. I found Hudlin's (Who Is) Black Panther volume by chance, which sent me to pick up this Collection 1 by Priest. Priest's writing (for me) set a standard. There are some plot twists that I didn't see coming, with BP having double- and triple-crossed many of the enemies he encounters...there are (still relevant) explorations of race with regards to how "white" America sees "black" America and how darker-skinned Americans see themselves...using Everett Ross as the narrator and (according to Priest) voice of not only white America but ALL of comic fandom with regards to how he/we saw the BP character to that point was genius...the invention of the deadly Dora Milaje and the innate conflicts that come with having two deadly, teenage body-guards who were also (only in theory, Ross reminds us) concubines, was brilliant and made sense given the tribal make-up of Wakanda and T'Challa's status as King. My one criticism, writing-wise, is the consistent reliance on an in media res opening to many of the stories which results in stale flashbacks and "oh, let me explain how we got here" moments. The art is the only inconsistency, with the opening artist leaving soon after the first arc. The final artist in this collection is perhaps my least favorite, but none of the art is bad.
T'Challa is an important character because--not to beat a dead horse--he's the first African Marvel super-hero, who beats the Fantastic 4 in his introduction, who is as powerful as Capt America (who respects him as an equal & a friend), who is loyal, smart, royal, noble to a fault, has no racial inferiority complex, is not afraid of any power structure or government, who'll kill but only if he finds it absolutely necessary, who cares about his people as well as others, and who is just plain AWESOME at his job...or, in other words, the ANTITHESIS of what the media has portrayed dark-skinned men to be over the past 200 years, and what some dark-skinned people have believed about themselves over that same time period. Regardless of their reasoning (expected sales boosts, pre-cursor to the announced BP movie, whatever else) I'm happy Marvel decided to finally release Priest's run on BP, even if the quality did taper off toward the end of it back in the late 90's/early 2000's. This is the collection and the character I will definitely introduce first to my children whenever they decided to poke at or thumb through their father's comic collection.

Equal parts West Wing/Pulp Fiction/Coming to America
By E.M.Pennington
Priest's work here firmly established the Black Panther as a force to be reckoned with in the Marvel Universe. As smart as Iron Man, as tough as Captain America; Panther was moved out of the background for fans who thought of him as another affirmative action Avenger. Instead, he's portrayed as a stranger in a strange land as a tribal head of state searching for justice for his people in our chaotic country. This series gives great depth to the Panther's country of Wakanda, bringing it to logical conclusions without shunning years of continuity. Also, it brings with it a rich cast of supporting characters. Not the least of whom is the readers P.O.V. character: Everett K. Ross, an infinite source of racial awkwardness and misunderstanding.

Equal parts West Wing, Pulp Fiction and Coming to America, the book's writing is socially, racially and politically irreverent fun*. While the narrative's linear jumble can be challenging at times but reads better here for all being in one place. Additionally, the books starts off with a gorgeous run of painted artwork before switching over to an animated style and then settling in on more traditional comic styles. This doesn't help narrative troubles, especially in regards to the political intrigue aspects of plot. But, really, this is my only complaint about this book.

I am eagerly anticipating the next two volumes to this story and hope for a final and fourth installment. When my friends ask why they should be excited about an upcoming Black Panther movie, this is what I'm going to push in their direction. It's a gorgeous collection and one I've been waiting ten years for.

*For fans concerned about the racial undertones of this story, I feel fairly confident in saying that many stereotypes are skewered. The author of these works is African American and fairly vocal about what the work meant to him. You can google him and find numerous discussions he's held on the topic. Or you can read his column at the end of this volume.

The World's First Stock Exchange (Columbia Business School Publishing), by Lodewijk Petram

The launch of the Dutch East India Company in 1602 initiated Amsterdam's transformation from a regional market town into a dominant financial center. The Company introduced easily transferable shares, and within days buyers had begun to trade them. Soon the public was engaging in a variety of complex transactions, including forwards, futures, options, and bear raids, and by 1680 the techniques deployed in the Amsterdam market were as sophisticated as any we practice today.

Lodewijk Petram's eye-opening history demystifies financial instruments by linking today's products to yesterday's innovations, tying the market's operation to the behavior of individuals and the workings of the world around them. Traveling back to seventeenth-century Amsterdam, Petram visits the harbor and other places where merchants met to strike deals. He bears witness to the goings-on at a notary's office and sits in on the consequential proceedings of a courtroom. He describes in detail the main players, investors, shady characters, speculators, and domestic servants and other ordinary folk, who all played a role in the development of the market and its crises. His history clarifies concerns that investors still struggle with today, such as fraud, the value of information, trust and the place of honor, managing diverging expectations, and balancing risk, and does so in a way that is vivid, relatable, and critical to understanding our contemporary financial predicament.

Review

This is an extremely accessible and clear description of a fascinating topic. Lodewijk Petram writes with the general reader in mind and carefully conveys the intricate details of the issues addressed in an admirably lucid way. It is one of the best explanations I have seen of various aspects of securities trading that are still relevant today.

(Ailsa Rell, professor of international and public affairs, Columbia University)

Petram's book is a very good example of that rare specimen, a financial history book for a popular audience. The reader gets a very good feeling of atmosphere, of time and place, and of the specific society that gave rise to our contemporary financial structure.

(Joost Jonker, NEHA Professor of Business History, University of Amsterdam)

This book is a wonderfully textured account of the rise of stock trading in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. It is replete with the personalities, circumstances, wisdom, and folly of the men who fashioned from nothing our modern world of derivatives, repos, and naked short selling. It can be read for pleasure as well as instruction.

(Gregory Clark, University of California, Davis, and author of The Son Also Rises)

The inventions of shares of stock and of a stock exchange are arguably as formative to the development of the world we live in as the discovery of the telescope or of the laws of motion. And those financial innovations were born in Amsterdam. Lodewijk Petram takes us back to 1602, when it all began, and shows how the major elements of the financial life of our time came into being. A clear and vital book.

(Russell Shorto, author of Amsterdam: A History of the World's Most Liberal City)

Petram's informed and lively account of Amsterdam's 17th-century securities market demonstrates that when it comes to investing and speculating we have not progressed much in four centuries. Although a company's dividend may sometimes have been paid in East Indian spices as well as cash, in most respects Dutch financial markets were surprisingly modern, with not just shares and bonds, but also forward contracts, derivatives, even repo financing with haircuts. And, of course, the Dutch experienced frauds, bankruptcies, crises, and corporate governance problems. While modern Wall Street may have succeeded Amsterdam as the leading market, what goes on there is hardly new.

(Richard Sylla, New York University Stern School of Business)

A fascinating book... I can recommend unequivocally to anyone with even a modicum of interest in the history of financial markets.

(Brenda Jubin Investing.com)

... Petram does a fine job of bringing history to life and showing its relevance to modern financial crisis. Recommended for readers interested in the origins of the stock market.

(Library Journal)

... In its focus on the 17th century Dutch stock market, this book gives a fascinating look at a remarkable episode in financial history.

(Financial History)

Fascinating.

(Finance Professionals Post)

Fresh Lessons from the Past because sometimes things stay the same
By IronGaspar
For those who love Financial History this book is a gem. Just like a detective, the author searched through old correspondence and files in order to put together the stories told in the book, which he intertwines and explains along with the historical context and with some quotes from the first known book about the Markets: Confusin de confusiones.

The stories collected from these records and letters are great and he narrates them in a very entertaining way. These stories range from the use of derivatives, fraud, insiders, insider trading, conflict of interest, regulation, naked short selling, repos, conspiracies, manipulations, blame others for our bad investments, etc. Sorry, nothing new.

I think reading these kind of books is a great help to fully understand the evolution of Markets and Exchanges and its internal workings; to understand the importance of some very old but important rules which we tend to forget; to understand why some pernicious behaviors are so difficult to eradicate;to understand how the bad reputation of many participants came to be and why it persist; to understand that those who refuse to regulations and show all its shortcomings and disadvantages are almost always the ones who benefit most from avoiding regulation and keeping the status quo; to have a more balanced perspective because it's not that there are bad guys and good guys, it's just that humans are prone to irrationality and to the dark side of the force.

Essential to understanding modern financial markets but as atmospheric as fiction
By Catherine Macaulay
‘The World’s First Stock Exchange’ is the right book for readers whose enjoyment of historical fiction set in the Golden Age inspires them to seek out well-researched background information. I would also recommend it to professionals and students of economics and finance at all levels. It is full of surprises that provide insights into our contemporary financial system and turns on its head the popular misconception of untold wealth, easily obtained from East Indies trade.
Petram uses a huge range of original sources that he analyses using his expertise as an economist. His book provided me with the breadth and accuracy of information I needed to complete a recent research paper on flaws in the structure of the contemporary financial market system. ‘The World’s First Stock Exchange’ is such a good read that this part of my research was pure pleasure.

As the publisher of this book, I was drawn to it because the best financial history educates and entertains. I have always loved the historical fiction of David Liss and the re-publications of the Wiley Investment Classice. Reading Petram's well-researched and well-written book shows the sophistication of the first stock exchange. The author introduces readers to thje remarkable work by de la Vega, Confusion de Confusiones.. Those interested in the markets or man will value this book

Even though I enjoy sweet romances, there are times when I just can't resist a smoldering erotic novel from Ellora's Cave.

I was almost positive that Ross was going to be an ass after he first appears, but he really surprised me. Though he was controlling and slightly manipulative, Lissa held her own and gave as good as she got.

I had to turn off the heat in my bedroom as I read this due to the hot and sizzling sex. If I could have, I'd have turned on the air conditioning because Lord do they go at it like a couple of bunnies.

Overall I really enjoyed this novella and would love to see these characters revisited one day.

Amazon.com Review
Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is for most children pure pleasure in prose. While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll's putative use of complex mathematical codes in the text, or debate his alleged use of opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through the rabbit hole, pursuing "The dream-child moving through a land / Of wonders wild and new." There they encounter the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among a multitude of other characters--extinct, fantastical, and commonplace creatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathom the meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to be "curiouser and curiouser," seemingly without moral or sense.

For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfully non-moralistic, non-educational virtues of this classic. In fact, at every turn, Alice's new companions scoff at her traditional education. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that he took the "regular course" in school: Reeling, Writhing, and branches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. Carroll believed John Tenniel's illustrations were as important as his text. Naturally, Carroll's instincts were good; the masterful drawings are inextricably tied to the well-loved story. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
A clock-face grows like the daisies around it as the White Rabbit hurries by; in the opening pages of the story, Browne hints at his interpretive presence in Carroll's world. A burning key, a fish swimming through space, a green thread winding its way through a cabinetful of strange objects, and the artist makes it clear that this will be no ordinary Alice. Thimbles and umbrellas bloom atop green stalks, Willy the chimp races by, another thimble casts the shadow of a trophy, the Caterpillar wears a smoking jacket covered with butterflies. The Mad Hatter has a stack of his wares on his head, and wears a terrible grimace; the tea party at which he resides displays a table full of toylike objects and sweets, among which are many surprising juxapositions. In short, the volume is so consumed by the unexpected that readers may well find their eyes leaving the text to pore over the pictures, replete with jaunty details and stunning surreal images that grandly point back in the direction of the written word. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-Up-McGraw provides a unique visual interpretation of Carroll's classic tale. As in Natasha Wing's Hippity Hop, Frog on Top (1994; o.p.) and Edward Lear's The New Vestments (1995; o.p., both S & S), his gouache illustrations are marked by bold, rich colors and a collage-style layout. His work suggests the influence of early 20th-century abstract, fantasy, and surrealist painters, as well as that of contemporary illustrator Brian Wildsmith. At times, the trip through Wonderland appears nightmarish. The images of Alice with the bottle of poison in front of her face and the executioner as a masked club card clutching an ax are particularly jarring. The story can be read on many levels. McGraw has chosen to portray the deeper, darker side of Alice's adventures. This is definitely a sophisticated and special interpretation that will appeal to a very limited, mature audience.

I finally, and seemingly permanently, misplaced the 40 year old copy of 'The Annotated Alice' (which I had pilfered from my mother's bookshelf) for the last time. I can't go more than a month or two without it so I rushed to buy a new copy...just weeks before the more beautifully bound 'Definitive Edition' was published. No matter, now I have two (perhaps even three if the original turns up).
My point is that this book contributed more to my understanding of logic and wordplay than several semesters of college philosophy classes. If you've read this far then I am probably preaching to the choir but 'Alice in Wonderland' can hardly be classified as a childrens' book, dispite Disney's attempts to do so. The concepts Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner bring to this tale cover such areas as set theory, meta-language, Aristotelian logic, topography, game theory, several pre-Socratic logic paradoxes, and even quantum physics. Yet John Tenniel's original illustrations remain as an welcome tether to the original publication.
Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing all the various aspects of these two stories together as he illuminates layer upon layer of meaning that might not be evident to an American audience or, for that matter, a 21st century one. My favorite gems are the French and German translations of The Jabberwocky.
This book ranks in my top five favorite books of all time.

The Looking Glass Shows Hidden Humor
By Ian
I always enjoyed the twisted logic and unique sence of humor that I found in Lewis Carroll's Alice tales, the only problem I encountered was that some of the jokes required information that was no longer common knoledge. For example: when Alice continually misquoted the old English nursery rhymes I found myself wondering what the actual versions were, information that every child in Victorian England could have easily told me but that has since been lost to obscurity. After reading through this book I found the answers to all my original questions as well as many that I never considered asking. At first I thought that the commentary would strip the original work of its character and reduce it to a lifeless shadow. I found that the commentary did exactly the opposite, in a surreal way it made the book even more entertaining to read. The incredible detail of the commentary and the wide range of topics covered made the comments themselves seem part of the insane illogic that pervades the realms of wonderland and looking glass house. This does not mean that the coments themselves are insane or illogical, on the contrary they are all intresting and many offer new insights into the books, what makes the commentary so entertaining is how the story of "exactly 7 and one half" Alice is juxtaposed with comments on how the structure of the plot relates to physic and Robert Oppenheimer. Altogether I found the Annotated Alice to be a wonderful read and a gorgeous book which I recomend to anyone who enjoyed the original tales.

Master of Nonsense
By Bryan A. Pfleeger
The Annotated Alice provides a treasure chest of information on the two Alice books and on the man, Lewis Carroll who was responsible for their creation.
Martin Gardner provides annotations throughout the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Gardner's annotations help explain the inside jokes and mathematical and linguistic puzzles that fill the stories.
Reading the Alice books as an adult is quite a different experience than it was as a child. The books' complexity really stands out on a careful reading. In fact, what are generally regarded as children's stories can be amazingly frustrating to read due to the complexity of the language and the almost constant stream of puns that are sometimes lost on modern audiences. One must remember that the stories are told purely for fun. Unlike other Victorian children's literature one gets no morals, plot development, or character development here. Alice is a yound child who stays a young child throughout her adventures. She neither matures or learns anything from her adventures.
This is a very nice volume in its own right. It contains complete authoritative texts of both books and includes the supressed episode "The Wasp in the Wig." The original Tenniel illustrations are crisp and clear. The only difficulty is that the annotations are placed on the same page as the text in a small column that sometimes supplies more information than the text itself. The annotations themselves range from the definitional to the clearly eccentric. One can read all of them or only the ones that he or she is interested in.
On the whole this is an excellent volume well worth the effort to read if one has any interest in the world of nonsense literature.

From the Inside Flap

Since the original edition of The Elements of Investing was published over three years ago, investors have faced difficult economic times along with unprecedented market volatility. It's not surprising that many investors simply abandoned the stock market. It seemed to be too risky a place for retirement savings, and the situation was too unnerving for most to handle. Moreover, some professionals started to announce the death of "buy and hold" and "diversification" strategies.

Burton Malkiel and Charles Ellis, two of the investment world's greatest thinkers, understand how you could get thoroughly confused by today's markets and the often-conflicting advice that comes with it. That's why they've returned with an Updated Edition of The Elements of Investing. While staying true to the original edition—and discussing the timeless investing and saving lessons that will put you on a path towards a lifetime of financial success—this book also contains fresh insights found in an additional chapter on rebalancing, which focuses on important issues such as fine-tuning your bond diversification strategy to reflect the realities of today's markets.

Written with every investor in mind, this short, straight-talking book skillfully offers a set of simple, yet powerful thoughts on how to avoid Mr. Market and his "loser's game," and instead enjoy the "winner's game" approach to investing. All the investment rules and principles you need to know are here—with clear advice on how to follow them.

Divided into six essential elements of investing, this little book packs a big message that can help secure your financial future all the way through retirement. Malkiel and Ellis touch on a variety of topics, from focusing on the long term instead of following market fluctuations to using employer-sponsored plans to supercharge your savings and minimize taxes. Along the way, they also address the best friends of any investor: diversification, rebalancing, dollar-cost averaging, and indexing.

The timeless lessons presented in this book are even more relevant in today's volatile markets. If you take the time to learn them, you will be able to take control of your financial future.

Simply the best
By T. W. Badura
Of all the investment books I've read in the past few months, this one is the best. It has the most practical advice, distilled into plain English, that anyone can understand. Thanks Burt and Charley for a wonderful book, and the updated edition is terrific. The newbie investor would benefit the most from reading this book, but I am recommending this book to everyone. As I told a colleague at work, if you can only read one book on investing, this is the one to read. I will also go back every couple of years and re-read this book. The information and advice is timeless.

Great gift for those who think investing is "too complicated."
By Montana Skyline
This brief handbook of investing rules-of-thumb is one of the best of its kind. The updated edition expands on some recent topics, but mostly re-emphasizes the basics. Essentially, this is a short-hand distillation of the thinking presented at greater length in Malkiel's classic "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" and Ellis's "Winning the Loser's Game." I think most readers might enjoy reading these underlying books, e.g., the latest, 11th edition of Malkiel's book is due out in January 2015. Put this together with the volumes noted above (others are listed in a short "Recommended Reading" section at book's end) and all but professionals will have at hand 95% of what they will ever need to know about smart investing.

A great gift to family and friends who think that investing is just "too complicated" --- and not a bad thing for all of us to re-read from time-to-time!

Very good overview, written in an accessible way
By G_to-the_D
nice general overview for the new and seasoned investor alike. Burton and Malkiel present their perspective on investment based on many decades of experience, and given their incredible, august pedigrees, it makes you stop and listen (made me listen, anyway). If you are already an index, Boglehead style investor, you will not hear anything new, but they definitely will drive what you already know home in your head. And they don't mind sharing their own thoughts and differing in opinion at times (for example, one suggests no bonds during the accumulation phase of investing, and the other suggests a modest-to-sizable bond position, although I forget who suggest what).

If you are a stock picker or fret about what the market is doing on a day-to-day basis, prepare to have your world rocked, though.
