We use it in my class at Veterinary medicine, and it's great; it's pretty easy to understand, and the chapters aren't that long, so it's possible to read a chapter in the bus og on the train.

Would recommend it for everybody interested in Microbiology in animals, and in zoonoses.

This is a GREAT, great book for learning veterinary micro. I've read and bought (unfortunately) a few books on the matter and it would have been nice if I had bought this one first....would have saved me some money, and I would have a more fluent understanding of the matter at this point.

An excellent book on the risks associated with modern technology. Looks at the risks of car and plane travel, food additives, nuclear power, and other controversial topics. Lots of interesting examples. Did you know, for example, that the US government measures incoming wine for radiation, and rejects it if it's not radioactive enough

Lewis makes the good point here that too often we fear the unlikely while remaining complacent about true dangers. Many, for instance, believe nuclear power plants impose great risks, ignoring the greater threat from automobiles. The public spends excessive money and time looking for ways to bury toxic waste, or eliminate possible carcinogens from food,while overlooking natural health risks. Regulations created to make us safer often have the opposite effect. Citizens should acquire a greater understanding of risk and how it influences our lives.

The book is divided into three sections. The first gives an overview of risk and the issues involved, the second examines the role risk plays in air travel, radiation and pollution, and the third gives the reader a small mathematics lesson in probability.

It should be made clear right from the start this is not the sort of book to curl up with by the fire. It is written to educate, not entertain. One can hear the scientist speaking through the writing, wringing his hands at out ignorance and disbelief. Unfortunately Lewis is likely preaching to the converted. Those who agree with him already may make up the bulk of his readership. Others will likely stop reading about twenty pages in.

An Easy-to-Read Introduction to Ninjutsu

Ninja were born and trained in families devoted to the study and practice of ninjutsu as their profession. Secrecy was the foundation upon which all successful ninja defended. Rigid security measures began at the very root of all ninja organizations.

In Ninjutsu The Art of Invisibility, Donn Draeger reveals the secrets and history of the ninja.

In their training the ninja became extremely physically fit. The ninja could cover extremely long distances in a very short time, or walk in absolute silence using ten special walking techniques revealed by Donn Draeger. The ninja trained hard to become a competent woodsman, to have the ability to live off the land.

The ninja developed skills with medicines that made him his own doctor. He could allay and cure the effects of insect bites, poisons, internal disorders and general ailments.

Donn Draeger reveals many of the tools and weapons of the ninja such as the ninja-sword and the shuriken.

Beyond this most people of the day believed the ninja to be sorcerers and magicians with power and mastery over the forces of nature. The occult powers of the ninja were spoken of in quiet whispers... and this gave the ninja even greater power over his enemies.

We read of the ninja's ability to become invisible, and Donn Draeger gives us the ten rules of a ninja's invisibility.

Finally we are presented with stories of ninja missions in fact and in legend.

What Ninjas Remember About their Traditions

I ran a feudal Japan newsletter for ten years, and in that time I read many books on ninja. This book is one of the more basic on the topic, covering the general history of the ninja and the rumors about their feats. It does not go into any real detail about what the ninja did, how they did it, or provide documentation for further research into specifics.

First, the basics. Trained spies have been used in Japan for at least 1,500 years, with clans of spies training their acolytes in the remote hills. Various rulers used these spies for legitimate as well as less savory reasons. In a culture which celebrated honor and bushido - the way of the warrior - the ninja were looked down on as dogs and vermin. Still, they had their uses, and were paid well for their work.

Ninja were trained from childhood to have exceptional balance, jumping ability, stamina for long runs, and great body strength. They practiced close listening, to judge how many people were in a room by minute rustles and the sound of exhales. The book goes on to explain a variety of techniques ninja would use to overcome various obstacles they might encounter.

I am less sure about the "ninja costume" laid out. I cannot imagine that all ninja clans collaborated to buy standard ninja costumes from the Ninja Costume Store. I imagine that for a given case the ninja would research the local dress and find something to blend in but that also had secret pockets for his tools and a color to blend in with whatever he was most likely to be near. Yes, it might be a dark outfit for night work - but it could easily be light grey if the task was to go along grey walls. It might be something resembling a monk's robe if for example the ninja was going into a monastery, so that from afar he would be taken for a random monk.

That is how it goes with the book. Some sections seem quite rational and reasonable - but others seem a bit iffy. Since nothing is ever quoted with a source, and there is no bibliography in the back to see where this information came from - you're left with the impression that these are all stories handed down from current martial arts contacts of the author. I have no doubt that these sources really believe the stories they have shared! And I imagine that a portion of them are true. However, a portion is going to be legend or tales mis-remembered or mis-said over the years.

If anything, this means we are reading a list of "What current members of ninja-style fighting groups believe about their traditions" which is interesting. However, for more factual, historical information, I'd go with one of the many other books on this topic.

Bearing the subtitle "More Notes of a Native Son," "Nobody Knows My Name" is a follow-up to Baldwin's earlier, more famous book. Originally published in national magazines between 1954 and 1961, these essays are more mature, if less biting, than his first collection--and they are certainly just as witty. With one notable exception, they are timeless and trenchant commentaries on racial and cultural issues.

The first group of eight essays focuses on the political and social divides in the United States. The opening article reiterates the discovery he made in "Notes of a Native Son": that by living in Europe he paradoxically discovered what it means to be an American. Others examine the despicable inhumanity of a Harlem public housing project ("cheerless as a prison"), the success of the student movement and the rise of Muslim power in black politics ("a very small echo of the black discontent now abroad in the world"), and the first efforts to integrate Southern public schools ("the entire nation has spent a hundred years avoiding the question of the place of the black man in it"). The two most memorable essays detail the daily bravery, trauma, and humiliations of a schoolboy who is the first black in an all-white school and respond to Faulkner's despicable remarks on race (which were made when Faulkner was seemingly drunk and which were later repudiated when he was atypically sober).

The only disappointing essay is "Princes and Power," an account of Le Congres des Ecrivains et Artistes Noirs (Conference of Negro-African Writers and Artists). The internal disputes and lofty goals of this gathering--convened to consider "the history of Euro-African relations" and the postcolonial "cultural inventory"--did not lack for interest, and Baldwin ably relates the tensions between and cross-purposes of American blacks and Africans. But, overall, he seems to be just phoning it in, muffling the obvious passions of the conference participants and highlighting instead the abstract academic tone.

The second and final group of five essays highlight cultural subjects. He follows a speech detailing the outline for an imaginary novel with biographical appraisals of Andre Gide, Ingmar Bergman, Richard Wright, and Normal Mailer. His eulogy for Wright, initially composed and published in three disparate parts, simultaneously expresses regret for Baldwin's youthful criticism of the older author that resulted in the irreparable destruction of their friendship and recounts Wright's sad social decline: "he had managed to estrange himself from almost all of the younger American Negro writers in Paris ... [who] had discovered that Richard did not really know much about the present dimensions and complexity of the Negro problem here, and, profoundly, did not want to know."

But the gem of the collection is "The Black Boy Looks at the White Boy," Baldwin's tongue-in-cheek account of his friendship with Normal Mailer, written both as not-so-subtle payback for Mailer's criticism of Baldwin in the self-indulgent "Advertisements for Myself" and as a tribute to Mailer's talent and "responsibility" as an artist. After sending off a number of barbed (yet good-natured) repartees, Baldwin acknowledges not only Mailer's importance as a "very good friend" but also his worth as a writer. Baldwin's assessment of that career serves at as fitting coda to Baldwin's own essays: "His work, after all, is all that will be left when the newspapers are yellowed, all the gossip columnists silenced, and all the cocktail parties over, and when Norman and you and I are dead."

Not your parents' money management book

First, here's what this book is not: It's not your parents' money management and investing book, although as a parent I wish I had done in my twenties what Ramit Sethi tells the twenty-somethings they should be doing right now.

Ramit starts with the premise that most people are so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of financial information available that they just shut down and do nothing. So Ramit tells you exactly what to do with your money and why. Want to know whether it's smarter to pay extra on your student loans or put that money into your 401(k) instead? Ramit will tell you. Want to know some specific financial companies that offer the low-cost index funds you should invest in through your Roth IRA? Ramit will tell you. Do you not even know what the heck an index fund is? Ramit will tell you!

Ramit also tells the truth about brown bagging your lunch and curbing your latte habit; and the truth is that these actions on their own are virtually pointless. Instead, you should go after the big wins, like getting the lowest interest rate and the best price on your next car because you have impeccable credit and negotiated "like an Indian" (negotiation scripts included).

Ramit maps out exactly how to get from where you are now to where you want to be financially, including how to create a personal money management system that practically manages itself. Ramit's system starts with a no-fee checking account and an online high-interest savings account. (He even tells you which online bank he uses.) He then walks you through setting up automatic bill payments and regularly scheduled transfers to your investment accounts. Throughout, he includes easy-to-understand charts, as well as short pieces by other personal finance bloggers.

I wish I could quote some of the passages that I found especially useful or entertaining--Ramit writes with an appealing, if oddball, humor--but I have already mailed my copy of the book to my 24-year-old son, who called me last night to tell me it never would've occurred to him to ask his bank to waive an overdraft fee. I Will Teach You To Save Money, though a far less titillating title would be the more appropriate name for this book. 20 and 30 somethings are the intended audience for this book. And for them the book is delightfully irreverent and saucy in its language. You will not get rich by using the concepts in this book however you will gain basic financial literacy, which is the first step on the path to creating wealth. There are no new financial revelations in this book. If you already have a personal finance library you can pass on this book. If you don't already have one and are looking for a place to start, this book is a great way to go. I Will Teach You To Be Rich is not for people who have created a measure of wealth and are looking to increase it. For that you will have to look elsewhere.

This is my new #1 recommendation for anyone seeking personal finance advice.

This is definitely the best personal finance book I've read so far. It's a logical, step-by-step, practical handbook for financial success, specially written for people in their 20's. Sethi gives advice on “automatically enabling yourself to save, invest, and spend - enjoying it, not feeling guilty...because you’re spending only what you have.” His main point: automate your finances so you effortlessly save and invest, leaving you money to spend on things you love without feeling guilty. Automatic saving and investing helps overcome psychological barriers and laziness.

In addition to his emphasis on automation, I agreed with Sethi’s recommendation for long-term, passive, buy-and-hold investing instead of speculative, market-timing investing. I also liked Sethi’s 85 Percent Solution, which states that it's better to act and get it 85% right than to do 0%; sometimes good enough is good enough, and it’s always better than doing nothing.

Another good message is "spend extravagantly on the things you love, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't." That's valuable because everyone defines being "rich" differently, and it's not all about money. Money is just the tool we use to acquire the material possessions and experiences we want. That's the difference between being cheap and being frugal; being cheap is trying to cut spending on everything, and being frugal is cutting costs on the things you don't care about so that you can splurge on the things you do.

I liked the concept of making a Conscious Spending Plan instead of a budget. Almost no one actually makes a budget, and even fewer follow it. Instead, consciously decide how you'll spend your money. I especially like this idea of guilt-free spending, because too often the recommendation is to limit all spending. But people in their 20s want to live it up, not sit at home and pinch every penny! The Conscious Spending Plan lets you spend a certain percentage of your money on whatever you want, without feeling guilty, since you’re paying yourself and your bills first.

The book is written in the form of a 6-week action plan. Each chapter describes the tasks and reasoning behind them, and ends with a checklist of steps to take. Here are the weeks:

Week 1: Credit Cards. Check your credit, pick a good credit card, set up automatic payments, pay off debt.
Week 2: Bank Accounts. Open or assess your checking account, open and fund a high-interest savings account.
Week 3: Investing Accounts. Open a 401(k), make a plan to pay off debt, open a Roth IRA and set up automatic payment.
Week 4: Conscious Spending. Create a Conscious Spending Plan, track spending, and cut in the right places.
Week 5: Automatic Money Flows. List and link accounts, then set up an Automatic Money Flow to automatically fund the 4 categories of your Conscious Spending Plan.
Week 6: Investing Choices. Figure out your investing style, research investments, and buy funds.

The book gives a fairly in-depth explanation of the concepts and fundamentals of personal finance, but also contains plenty of examples of actual bank accounts and funds. There are many references to the 2008 recession and other events, so those parts of the book didn't age well.

Choose funds based on:
1. Expense ratio
2. Asset allocation
3. 10-15 year return

Model your portfolio after David Swenson’s Yale Endowment portfolio:
30% US stocks
15% developed international stocks
5% emerging market stocks
20% REITs
15% government bonds
15% TIPS

Buying a house
Houses are a poor investment compared to stocks; they’ve historically returned 0% after inflation. Before buying a house, determine the total monthly payment including mortgage, taxes, insurance, and maintenance. It should be less than 30% of your gross monthly income.
The total house price should be less than 3 times your annual gross income.
Buy a house only if you can live in it for 10 years. Make a 20% down payment and get a 30 year fixed rate mortgage.

To be fair, I probably should have listened to this one, but I did many of the other things Sethi points out.

Additional notes
Use savings for goals less than 5 years away.
Set your accounts for automatic deferrals, transfers, and payments to automatically direct money into retirement accounts, savings, bills, and a spending allowance.
Negotiate a higher total compensation (salary plus benefits) by researching compensation for comparable jobs and proving the value you bring to the company.

One thing I did was that I continuously talked to my friends about the book and we sat down together and completed a lot of the actions in sequence. By having those around me also aligned it made easier for me not to be tempted to go out. For example, we decided only to go out to eat for lunch once a week to stick to our plan.

Sethi also gives many tools and recommendations throughout the book to help you accomplish your goals.

uncommon murder story

This is a novel about the now common subject of sexual murders committted by a psychopathic man over some little girls in a city of South Spain. But the author goes much farther. The book takes his time to reach full interest but when this is attained you cannot leave it until the end. The inspector in charge of this case is natural of these city, but really he has been fighting against Basque terrorism in Northern Bilbao during the previous fifteen years. For that, he is in treatment for drinking too much, resource to prostitution, and his wife has suffered a nervous breakdown. This said, the author explains the troubled life of the inspector: son of a father jailed by Franco, he has been educated by Jesuit priests in a very though manner, for that, he says he only joined the police as a mean of life when democracy went to Spain. Once crimes begins, he joins old teachers and mates. One is the forensic, an old leftist oppossitor to Franco. The other is a very old priest. The coroner says today are much methods for knowing the murderer (DNA, etc). But the priest tells to the inspector that he must only see the eyes and gaze of the people, "Jesus knew Judas was to betray him only by watching at him". Furthermore, the appeareance of the inpsctor in the TV news, that he doesn't attain to avoid completely, sets again the terrorists over his track while he starts a love affair with a divorced woman. This novel is too much complex and the author shows extreme skill.

A simple approach to the golf swing..

After reading the book, I went out to the range and hit shot after shot with solid contact and pretty good accuracy. I am a 20 handicap and could not seem to make solid contact. I thought that it was a fluke, so I went back to the range the next day and again hit the ball solidly. I hope to take it to the course next week. Some of the body movements are out of date but the idea of swinging the club is still way ahead of it's time compared to present teaching.

Considering all of the books that have been written about golf, it is rare to find one that is so concise and clear. This book is all anyone will need to start learning golf. For those of us who have cluttered our minds with technical golf garbage over the years, this book is a great start to taking out the trash!

You've got to get that swingin' feelin'...

This book gives a solid foundation to learning the most important aspect of the golf game -- the Swing. Without it, I would probably still be spending more time fixing divots on the fairway than enjoying the game of golf. Jones has some simple and effective techniques to develop the feel of the swing. It's seems awkward at first (especially for those who have learned to 'whip' their clubs) but once you get the feel of the club, you'll be amazed at how fast your clubs gets the ball to your target. Overall, it's not a band-aid solution, but rather a solid foundation to build upon your game.
