About the Author

David Colander is Distinguished College Professor at Middlebury College. He has authored, coauthored, or edited over 40 books and over 150 articles on a wide range of economic topics.

He earned his B.A. at Columbia College and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. at Columbia University. He also studied at the University of Birmingham in England and at Wilhelmsburg Gymnasium in Germany. Professor Colander has taught at Columbia University, Vassar College, the University of Miami, and Princeton University as the Kelley Professor of Distinguished Teaching. He has also been a consultant to Time-Life Films, a consultant to Congress, a Brookings Policy Fellow, and Visiting Scholar at Nuffield College, Oxford.

He has been president of both the History of Economic Thought Society and the Eastern Economics Association. He has also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Economic Perspectives, The Journal of Economic Education, The Journal of Economic Methodology, The Journal of the History of Economic Thought, The Journal of Socio-Economics, and The Eastern Economic Journal. He has been chair of the AEA Committee on Electronic Publishing, a member of the AEA Committee on Economic Education, and is currently the associate editor for content of the Journal of Economic Education.

He is married to a pediatrician, Patrice. In their spare time, the Colanders designed and built an oak post-and-beam house on a ridge overlooking the Green Mountains to the east and the Adirondacks to the west. The house is located on the site of a former drive-in movie theater. (They replaced the speaker poles with fruit trees and used the I-beams from the screen as support for the second story of the carriage house and the garage.) They now live in both Florida and Vermont.

I'm still in the process of using this book for my college class, however I must say I really like how it is written. It is easy to follow which is a must since my class is online. This book arrived very quickly and was in very good used condition, just as I expected.

About the Author
Adam Tomkins is Fellow and Tutor in Law at St Catherine's College, Oxford. He was previously Lecturer (1991-1999) and Senior Lecturer (1999-2000) at the School of Law, King's College, London. A well-respected and highly published author, his works include The Constitution after Scott (OUP, 1998) and Sceptical Essays on Human Rights (OUP, 2001), co-edited with Tom Campbell and Keith Ewing.

An ideal place to (re)start

This book offers an introductory exposition of the English public law, which is ideal for the reader that is looking for a general overview of the field either as a newcomer or as someone already familiarized with it but wants to look it afresh. It has all the virtues of every good introduction: is fairly short, systematic and straightforward. But it has, at the same time, other virtues which are rare in clear and brief introductory texts like this one. It gives an account of public law that is lively reflexive and it is informed by an acute historical consciousness. In every important point (the doctrine of sovereignty of Parliament, the Ministerial Accountability, and so on) it offers a picture of the evolution of the matter without hiding the open possibilities and ambiguities behind the actual state of the latter.

It is not indeed a cold sub specie aeternitatis exposition of the subject, but one that gives due attention to the struggles and risks behind every step of the evolution it reconstructs. This book situates in this way the present state of the English public law in the formation and evolution of the British constitution, and situates itself, as a study on public law, within the English scholarly tradition public law and its transformations. It is an opinionated but well founded introduction that not only takes a justified position in every important debate on the subject, but it presents to the reader, from the very beginning, its general approach (crucially when sustaining that the important aspect of the English constitution is not its 'unwritten' but its 'political' character). Finally, the book not only embraces all the main aspects of the British constitution, but it contains a bibliographical essay with a careful selection of sources on the matters discussed in each chapter.

Frankly, you do not need this volume unless you are deep into Gregorian chant. It is a version of the Graduale Romaum, which provides the great corps of chant in the Western Church. That other volume is the one most people will want to have and sing from.

Who should get the Graduale Triplex? Those who want to know more about how the medieval composers and singers conceived their work. It takes the Graduale Romanum as it stands, with its admirably clear Solemes notation, and matches it with the various scratches and squiggles that were its various sources. In other words, as you decide how to interpret the printed text, you can see how the old singers wrote it down, and that will give you, one hopes, a clearer vision of how to bring the shapes on the paper to life off the page.

Instructions, illustrated by black-and-white drawings, are easy to understand and always note when adult help is needed. Each procedure is followed by an explanation of what should have happened and why. At times these explanations involve concepts that children might not easily grasp from the experiment alone. A description of light rays and focal points, for instance, is hard to follow without elaboration or diagrams. In another case, molecules are introduced as "...the smallest particles of a substance that can exist on their own," which is accurate, but not the clearest way to describe them. Some activities are so predictable that reading about them can substitute for performing them. Other projects are more intriguing, such as using oil, water, and sunshine to make a rainbow, or creating a simple sand clock. While many of the experiments are fun and instructive

While many of the experiments are fun and instructive, there are several which show a complete lack of understanding of the science behind them.
Some are impossible. eg, children are asked to catch and examine a live grasshopper under a magnifying glass. How this is to be done with a struggling insect is not clear. In the experiment entitled " Oil Rainbow" the colours seen when a thin film of oil is on to of water are due to refraction of light through the oil. In fact, they are caused by interference, This is a proof of the wave nature of light. The explanation is misleading.
The experiment entitled "Personal Gravity" tells the child to weigh her/himself at he top of a tall building, then weigh again at the bottom. While there is a difference in the weight of an object at a high altitude and a low one, this difference is far too small to be detected by a bathroom scale at tyhe top and bottom of the world's highest building. It is also stated that astronauts are weightless in earth orbit because they are far away from the earth's gravity. This is simply wrong.. The experiment "Wind Chill" is completely misleading. Wind chill affects only objects warmer than the environment. Not thermometers

Many of the experiments could easily expand into science projects

Seven year old grandson LOVES it. Materials lists are mostly ordinary items you already have. Instructions are simple to follow with limited adult supervision. Children older than 7 could likely complete them without help. We've worked through 3 of the first 4 chapters and the experiments all work as described. Many of the experiments could easily expand into science projects. And the best part: in this entire 4 day visit he has played about 2 minutes of Candy Crush and has been way more interested in repeating experiments than in computer games. I will be looking for the sequel.

great book for preschoolers

I used this book for my Head Start kids and we found out that they really liked the new found knowledge about science. The experiements were easy to understand and the materials were easy to purchase at the dollar store or the the dollar tree store and yard sales.
Have fun with the book and let the kids pick out what they might want to try in class together.
