Pastor's premarriage counseling

I have used Gary's book since I first discovered it many years ago. Of all the materials that I have found helpful in marriage counseling this one is at the top. It's practical, down to earth, and applicable to daily life. I have every couple who is planning on getting married read it. However, the people who seem to get the most out of it are those who have been married for a while and have a few emotional bruises to prove it. Thanks for a great resource. Totally an eye opener...filled with tools to use everyday with every relationship. Things you thought you knew you actually didn't. Enlightening and fun. Use with a group or a select few. This is something that once learned is never forgotten but as with everything needs to be focused on and applied. How I Learnt The Law

Do you remember what was described as that old chestnut, the `guide, philosopher and friend' called `Learning the Law' from the 1960s? I do... and I am happy to say that the Cambridge Professor, ATH Smith, has produced the very best effort for a new edition after an absence of 20 years. It is rightly described as essential reading for all potential lawyers, whether sixth-form students or graduates contemplating the study of law, or those considering career options. Whenever you are asked - what is the best book to start on if you want to know a bit about the English legal system?

The answer will be "Glanville Williams: Learning the Law". Much of the original text survives but Professor Smith has given much needed emphasis to the new legal agenda of the early twenty-first century - gone are the old, archaic references - and in come new, thrusting European Union law provisions which will warm the heart of the most die-hard Eurosceptic.

I like chapter 14 the best - it is entitled `General Reading'. It gives the best bibliography available for the range of works on the market for those who love the subject of law as much as some of the writers quoted clearly did. To read `Learning the Law' is an unforgettable experience. Thank you, Professor Smith, for bridging the twenty-year gap.

About the Author
Malcolm Smith was born in London, England. He came to the United States in 1964. While the pastor of a church in Brooklyn, New York, his ministry was radically changed by the revelation that the heart of the gospel was found in the unconditional love of God, expressed to mankind through Jesus Christ in the covenant. He became involved in teaching the charismatic renewal in the 1960s and 70s and was known throughout the world to many thousands on radio, TV, and through seminars and retreats. He is currently a bishop in the Community of the Holy Spirit. He is based in San Antonio, Texas, where with his wife, Nancy, heads of the Zoe Community of the Holy Spirit. There, he conducts retreats, seminars, and gives spiritual direction.

This Book Changed My Life!!!!

The first time I read this book, I read it under the cover of 'The Lost Secret of the New Covenant'. I wept and cried with joy as I finally realized for the first time the depths of God's love for me. Understanding the Blood Covenant that we have with Jesus Christ has built my faith like no other teaching. I am so thankful to God that it is back in print, I don't care what name it is being published under. If you are sick to death of religion and all it's narrow minded legalism and want to know true freedom, then get this book.

This book is Awesome!!

When I first ordered this book in April 2010 I wasn't a Happy Camper. It didn't have anything to do with the content of the book. I couldn't not understand how you could sell one book under two separate titles. However, I noticed that the second book is no longer being offered. Trust me, I am pass that now. This book is absolutely the second best I have ever read. Of course, nothing can top the Bible. I have purchased 4 additional book since that time and it has impacted the lives of each person that have received it. This book demonstrates the heart of God in such a simple but profound way. There have been so many things that have taken place since studying this book. I have witness to so many people from a covenant perspective and the Gifts of the Spirit have operated through me to bless other people. I get it! It's hard to explain but this book has really connected the dots for me in so many ways. I am on my forth reading of the book and I am sure this is what I will be studying for the rest of the year. If you practice what is taught you will be blessed beyond your wildest dreams. God is an awesome God!!

I studied it as I read it the first time and read some places over and over and then begin to read it, just reading. It is marvelous and Malcom Smith's style is witty, creative and very easy to comprehend even though the topic is something most 'Westerners' are extremely unfamiliar with. An understanding of the Blood Covenant opened up many scriptures that once seemed obscure and enhanced my relationship with Father God beyond words. Read it over and over and over...'we know and believe the love He has for us.'

Indispensible

I'm not a scholar of the period, but the book strongly recommends itself as the standard history of the blacklist era. Co-written in 1970, it's since undergone a number of reprintings, including a provocative Afterward to the 1983 issue, where the authors respond to critics. It's a voluminous work, 400+ pages, with small print, so it's definitely not a quick read, though the text flows easily. A number of appendices help keep the sometimes confusing cast of players properly sorted.

As a fact-stating document, the work looks pretty exhaustive. Beginning with the Depression era 1930's, the narrative follows the growth of the Hollywood Left through the war years, to the post-war inquisition and decline, and into the cultural thaw of the 1960's. Focus is mainly on developments within and without the Screen Writers Guild (SWG), the most left-wing of the industry unions, and from whose ranks many broader industry coalitions emerge. It's their battles with the producers over the final product that constitutes a key subplot, and lesser known phase of the Hollywood wars. The emphasis throughout remains on events rather than individuals, though a number of key figures do predominate-- Trumbo, Lawson, Biberman, et al. Nonetheless, what we learn of these and other pivotal players is strictly a tale of character and conviction rather than personality or peccadillo.

It's a sobering account with clear lessons for those raised on high-school civics classes. No one likes to think of democratic America as purging the unorthodox for "thought-crimes'. Yet, all things considered, it's hard to resist some such real life conclusion. The pressures through which the entertainment industry were finally brought to heel make for a fascinating and essential read. For me, it's surprising the extent to which some of the studios (e.g. MGM!) resisted the onslaughts at the same time others (e.g. Warner Bros.) capitulated almost immediately. Not surprisingly, the emotions of that treacherous period have never faded away. Even now, the blacklist remains highly charged, erupting again, for example, during a 1999 awards presentation for HUAC-collaborator Elia Kazan.

The book takes a generally sympathetic, but not uncritical, view of those blacklisted. Still, the various nuances, as recounted in the book, are simply too complex and various to try to summarize here. (The complexity is heightened by the many acronyms that pop up on almost every page-- a handy referencing guide would have helped.) On the other hand, the authors are categorical in their perspective on HUAC and its various incarnations. The committee is clearly viewed as a reactionary tool intent on exploiting anti-communist hysteria for basically anti-New Deal, anti-labor, and anti-Semitic aspirations. At the same time, the acumen of these forces is acknowledged. HUAC managed to pick off Hollywood's most vulnerable labor activists as part of a wider process that also sent the kind of chill through American liberalism that continues to frustrate labor organizing to present day. Proto-fascists or not, those guiding the committees knew what they were doing.

The book also dispells key misconceptions. One popular belief has it that the blacklist served only to punish communists. The fuller account, however, outlines the broader anti-labor, anti-civil rights agenda, spearheaded in part by HUAC and its minions, with the result that many anti-fascist liberals, "tainted" by Popular Front or New Deal associations, were also made to suffer by the changing political winds. In fact, the dragnet spread beyond known communists to include those unwilling to embrace the new Cold War orthodoxies. There's also a widespread tendency to identify the inquisition with the quixotic career of one man, Senator McCarthy, whose name has since become synonymous with the entire era. But as the text shows, the inquisition began much earlier with the 1930's Dies' committee, while the 1947 blacklist took place well before McCarthy's 1950 advent. In fact, the New Deal backlash was much deeper than the ambitions of any one person.

If there's a drawback, it's the occasional absence of specific national and international events that influenced the progress of the inquisition. Thus, little effort is made to link the purges to strains in the liberal-left alliance as impacted by the Wallace campaign of 1948 or the replacement of Party head Earl Browder in 1944. Similarly, little or no mention is made of the communist triumph in China or the war in Korea, both of which contributed greatly to the climate surrounding the 1951 hearings. Nonetheless, whatever the minor defects, the consequences of that reactionary period are still being felt, most notably through the disastrously reduced role of labor in national decision-making of which the Bush years now stand as a clear beneficiary. All in all, the Ceplair-Englund work remains essential for anyone searching for a handle on post-war America.

As Definitive a Book as We are Likely to Get about the Hollywood Blacklist

A fair, thorough, well, researched, and well-written history of a highly controversial topic. Ceplair does an excellent job putting the Hollywood Blacklist into historical context and describing the global and national events in which the Blacklist was created.

This book is as close to definitive as we will probably get. The

Unlike so many other authors, Ceplair does not glorify the Hollywood Ten and others that were blacklisted and does not minimize the existence of the Communist Party in Hollywood.

The book is a difficult read. Not all of the work problems at the end of the chapters have examples to glean from. I haven't checked yet, but if there is a solutions manual, you might consider getting that also or you will be left guessing weather you are correct or not. Another thing is, the online resource that comes with the book isn't worth the time it takes to access it on the web, unless you like doing crosswords puzzles of pharmacy terms instead of seeing working mathematical examples of applicable problems.

Auras: See Them in Only 60 Seconds! by Mark Smith does just one thing. It quickly teaches you to see the aura and then helps you make sense of the colors you see. Through focusing on this one technique, it becomes one of the most thorough books on the subject ever published.

Auras: See Them in Only 60 Seconds! (previously published as In A New Light) provides ten easy steps for learning to see the aura. How easy? Step one is to have the subject whose aura you wish to view stand eighteen inches to two feet in front of a bare white wall. Step three is for you to view the subject from at least ten feet away. Steps five and six give you the keys to being able to easily see the aura. In step seven, you will be seeing the etheric aura. This is a band of fuzzy light around the subject, about one-quarter inch to one-half inch in depth. By step ten you will be seeing the second or astral aura. This is a larger band of light three inches to two feet around the body.

The book is filled with insights on interpretation and using your new knowledge of the aura. You will be able to see if people are healthy or ailing. You will learn about the auras of politicians and actors, of people in love and those near death.

The insights and skills you will learn from this book are remarkable. You will be surprised at just how easy it all is. But that, in a large part, is due to the writing skills of Mark Smith. Not what I expected

I was looking for a book, which would allow me to see auras for myself. Unfortunately, this book disappointed me. It only has one short exercise (and it's in the attachment), and doesn't really give you much to practice. The whole book is all about how the author met different famous people, and what their auras are like.
I eventually found a book on auras by Ted Andrews "How to see and read human aura", which gave excellent exercises, lots of helpful and practical advice, explained difficulties that you may have to face, how to deal with them, and other "special effects" you may see (e.g. differences between aura and afterimage etc.) To those who really want to see auras for themselves I would recommend this book by Ted Andrews (it worked for me, after a week of practicing, I started seeing auras!!)
If you want to entertain yourself and read about how auras look like, and author's personal experience with auras, and not particularly seeking to seriously learn how to see it yourself, go ahead and buy this book by Mark Smith. After all, if you are serious about learning something, you KNOW 60 seconds is never enough. I wish I thought about this when I bought this book.

Recommended read for those interested in auras

"Auras: See Them in Only 60 Seconds" provides an interesting way of seeing auras quickly. In summary the author's suggested technique is to look at the person in the same way that you would a stereogram. By focusing not on the person but on a point about eighteen inches past them you will see a faint aura surrounding the person. This does work but the technique brings on some questions. The reason a stereogram works is because it causes a mild cross-eyed effect. Since this same technique is used here I thought that I would see if it created an aura around other things besides people. Sure enough, I was able to see an "aura" around books, boxes, bricks, and just about anything else that I looked at this way. So, my first impression was that this is not a credible way to see an aura but just the normal result of crossing your eyes. On the other hand, I tried it several times and did find that I started to see tinges of various colors around people that were not there around inanimate objects. All inanimate objects continued to just have the gray "aura". The effects of crossing your eyes should not cause colors to appear that are not there in the object. So, maybe there is something to this after all.
The book is well written and easy to understand. The instructions are explained well enough that it is easy to follow the suggested process. The author details clearly what to expect and how to interpret various results. He also covers chakras, common auras for various occupations, how the various colors should be interpreted, etc. All in all this is an interesting book on auras and deserves a recommended read status for those who are interested in the subject.

The Best TEACHING book on Auras out there.

Having read some 30 books on auras, this one really shows you how to do it! Stand the subject 18 inches in front of a white wall, and stand at least 8 feet away. Look past the outline of the subject's head and shoulders, and if you stay focused on the wall, you will see the HALO as promised in less than 60 seconds. You will see color sometimes right away, but I didn't see that right away. That took 3 days, but I can now see them on most people. Everybody is different, both in the way they look, and in how long it takes to see colors. But this book is THE ONE. I don't know what other writers are talking about most of the time. Mr. Smith is the the first one to put it so clearly and helpfully. I happened to catch him on TV (CNN) and this caused me to buy the book.He seems very "normal" and I think he is really on to something here. Other books talk about auras, this book shows you HOW in more detail than I have gone into above. There is some autobiography here, but it illuminates the story, and keeps the interest. Highly recommended
