Great lessons by a great teacher...

What can I say...Russ is a great teacher. I enjoyed the material presented in the lessons a great deal. As a matter of fact, it is so good that even though I had purchased it years ago when it was packaged with cassettes, I decided to buy it again to have the cd for quick song access. I only wish Russ would make available the "20 Fiddle Tunes For Guitar", previously produced in cassette version, available in cd format!

Slanted history presented

I found the book to be very good. The introduction to each excerpted work was helpful in understanding the goal of the original writer. The only downfall I have is this particular author seems to be a bit of a revisionist. He very specifically leaves out important pieces that I assume he finds objectionable, such as the basis for the caste system.

A really good book

Before reading this book I thought I knew a lot about Indian religions. I always loved to go to temples and to listen to stories about the gods and read the Gita. I knew many of the saints and had even read some of their writings in my mother tongue and in English. But I was surprised how many saints there were in other parts of the country I had never heard about. Or if I knew their names, I didn't know very much about them. Who would have thought that the Sikh gurus could write such beautiful bhakti songs? And the writings of the Sufi saints are so beautiful - like the Hindu mystics in many ways. As for Buddhism and Jainism, I must admit I hardly knew anything and it was very interesting to read their scriptures. I of course knew that Buddha was from India but somehow I never thought of him as an Indian! Like everybody else I had a sort of bad idea about Tantra Yoga and was glad to learn that there is a lot more to it than people think. But my favourite part was reading the modern mystics like Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Aurobindo and also others like Swami Ramdas. I think everyone could learn a lot by reading this book even if they think they already know a lot about Indian religion. And if you don't know anything about it, this is the best introduction I have ever seen.

About the Author
Gilberto E. Urroz is an Associate Professor of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering and a researcher at the Utah Water Research Laboratory, both at Utah State University, in Logan, Utah. He has been a teacher of engineering disciplines for more than 15 years both in his native Nicaragua and in the United States. His teaching experience includes courses on introductory physics, engineering mechanics, probability and statistics for engineers, computer programming, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and numerical methods. His research interests include mathematical and numerical modeling of fluid systems, hydraulic structures, and erosion control applications. Dr. Urroz is an expert on the HP 48 G and HP 49 G series calculator, and on specialized mathematical software such as Maple and SCILAB. He has written several books on applications of these computing devices and software to disciplines such as engineering mechanics, hydraulics, and science and engineering mathematics

A great training resource for advanced HP 49g or HP 50g users

This book (Volume 1 of a two-volume set by Gilberto Urroz) provides step-by-step instructions for operating the Hewlett Packard HP 49g calculator. The HP 50g calculator is nearly identical to the HP 49g, so the Urroz books are also applicable to the HP 50g.

I own both Volume 1 and Volume 2 (I also own an HP 49g and an HP 50g). Volume 1 covers basic calculator operations and high-school-level math. Volume 2 covers uni- and multi-variable calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, and statistics.

These are excellent books. I highly recommend them. They are not slick, professional productions: they originated as class notes created by a university professor to teach the calculator to college engineering students.

Based on what a student can learn from these books, they deserve a five star rating. I was tempted to subtract one star for the many typographical and editorial errors, as well as for the teeny-tiny (eye-straining) font. If you can forgive these issues, these books should be of great help to you in learning about the advanced capabilities of the HP 49g or the HP 50g. These books cover the underlying math, as well as calculator operations.

Also check out the instructional video for the HP 50g produced by MathTutorDVD: The HP 50g Calculator Tutor (Hewlett Packard). If you are a new user, then these video lessons will be much more effective in teaching you the most useful operations and functions of the calculators. The Urroz books are really for advanced users, or folks who aspire to be advance users. The Urroz books cover the math and calculator operations in much greater depth than the MathTutorDVD product; but the books are also considerably more challenging.

These books assume the calculator is in RPN mode. If you don't know what RPN mode is, then do a little web research. If you want to use Algebraic mode, then don't buy this course, and don't buy the HP 50g (get a Texas Instruments calculator instead). If you are going to be a math, science, or engineering major, then switch to RPN mode today.

In the early days, Hewlett Packard would include wonderful instruction manuals with their calculators. Although HP does not provide a training manual for the HP 50g, they do have three documents for the HP 50g: (1) a 184 page "User's Manual," and (2) an 887 page "User's Guide," and (3) a 693 page "Advanced User's Reference Manual." You can download all three of these from the Hewlett Packard (HP) website.

Can you learn how to use your HP 49g or HP 50g without buying the Urroz books? Well, of course you could. But, if you have the cash to buy them, studying the Urroz books (and seriously practicing the covered calculator operations) will save you a lot of time and frustration (and will make other HP users jealous and amazed of your impressive calculator prowess).

If, in these tough economic times, your cash is too dear to spend on more books, then try: (1) reading through the three HP manuals; (2) looking at the HP 49g or HP 50g tutorial videos on you tube; and (3) searching for HP 49g or HP 50g tutorials online. For example, search university websites (*.edu) for HP 49g or HP 50g tutorials (e.g., Thiel college). On you tube, one fellow in particular has posted a series of great videos for the HP 50g.

But keep in mind, the HP manuals no longer provide detailed explanations and well-ordered, step-by-step examples. That is why I find these Urroz books so helpful: they provide the examples and the step-by-step instructions that HP manuals no longer provide. If you can't afford them, maybe you can get your library or department at school to buy them.

Volume 1 covers pre-calculus math, graphics, linear algebra, and basic programming. Here is the table of contents: Introduction; the keyboard (which you could also find in Appendix B of the HP 50g "User's Guide"); basic calculator operation; calculations with real numbers; calculations with complex numbers; lists, functions, and programs; programming basics; algebra and related subjects; vectors; matrices and linear algebra; graphics; and solutions to equations.

Volume 2 (sold separately Science and Engineering Mathematics with the HP 49 G - Volume II - Calculus, differential equations, statistics) covers calculus and statistics. Here is the table of contents: calculus 2; multivariate and vector calculus; differential equations; partial differential equations and Fourier transforms; statistical applications.

A great manual for beginners like me

This book's author clearly loves and respects HP graphing calculators. The book has what the hard copy manual and online documentation should have but don't: explanations that start at the beginning, which was important for me, because I have never before used a graphing calculator. I suspect the people who wrote the HP material assumed their audience consisted solely of people with some relevant experience. The reviewer who claims that you can find 99% of this material on HP's website is exaggerating, but even if he were strictly accurate, it wouldn't matter. The author provides the sentences that make everything clear.

The author uses RPN mode rather than the usual algebraic mode. The RPN mode is fine with me, but might be a problem for someone not used to it. I am using an HP 50g, which has some differences from the HP 49g, but not enough to damage the usefulness of this book. The book has a few typos, but no more than the first edition of any book of this kind. My only real complaint is that the binding is too cheap for a book that will regularly be propped open so that you can read it while you have your hands on the keyboard.

If you are a beginner with graphing calculators, I highly recommend this book. No one could reasonably ask for better. If you are an experienced user, maybe not. HP's online material may be enough.

Useful guide that is well organized, indexed and clearly written - clearly the best documentation out there for the high end HP's. But be prepared to work in RPL/RPN - the book doesn't deal with Alg mode at all.

I looked everywhere online for a detailed review on this book before buying it, with no luck. The book description of Jamie reaching out and telepathically connecting with the hero, Aerik, who isn't at first sure where she is got me interested enough to pay the $20 price.

Twenty-three year old Jamie McPherson lives in a small town by herself, having lost her family to different tragedies. One night she is feeling exceptionally grief-stricken and lonely. It is this time she inadvertently connects with Aerik Wolfe.

Aerik is a vampire who has lived for centuries. Jamie's mental touch from half a world away is unexpected, and her emotions call to him to find her. His kind are known as guardians of the night. They bring justice against those that kill or bring harm to innocent lives, making sure those enemies suffer equal or greater pain to that of their victims.

If you're looking for something action-packed, this might not be for you as most action happens much, much later in the book. The book focuses on the relationship between Jamie and Aerik with a plot on the unresolved case of the murder of Jamie's brother. In one or two instances you get a trip down memory lane to Aerik's earlier days before and after he turned vampire. Naturally in a vampire romance comes the issue of how a mortal and an undead will decide to continue their relationship. What will Jamie and Aerik do? I like that the heroine put a lot of thought into answering that question. Furthermore, I also appreciated that the source of their telepathic connection is explored rather than chalked up to an "unexplained act of Fate".

The book can at times be very descriptive, giving the reader a good idea of what's going on and sometimes making one anxious for a bit more dialogue. There are times that I thought Jamie could have figured out a few things a lot sooner than she did. She's not a heroine full of too much attitude, which can make a story frustrating to read. She's more open-minded to what Aerik is, and he's patient in developing his relationship with her. I admit I didn't feel the emotions in the characters like I have in Amanda Ashley's vampire books or Christine Feehan's Dark series. That's part of the reason I gave the book four stars instead of five.

As previous reviews have mentioned, there are a lot of grammar/spelling errors. Perhaps because I was expecting them it didn't bother me as much and I was able to return my focus to the story. Just be warned you'll find a lot of them.

All in all, the story is good. The title of the book has a special meaning in the story, and I liked the author's take on that. The plot is simple, but thankfully the author wraps up everything so you're not left hanging at the end. I appreciated the occasional humor that livened the story up a bit. I do wish the book wasn't so expensive, though. That's another reason for four stars. If you're in for a vampire romance fix and have run out of stuff to read, this is good for filling the time until you find something.

First of Guardian Vampires

This first book of Jody Offen's Guardian of the Night series is wonderful and captivating. I really enjoyed the personalities of the main characters Areik and Jamie as well as Tray. (Tray in the second is absolutely wonderful a must read)She provided us with forbidden love, humor, danger and sensuality. Areik soon learns that he is bound to Jamie by blood...the very blood he provided her mother with while pregnant with Jamie so they both would survive a terrible car cash.

I loved this book as well as the second one, I found it to be exciting and entertaining. I am anxiously awaiting a third installment - hopefully with Dare and Tiannia's story! I would also like to know about Torin and Jenaver.

It was good..................

I thought this first time novel from Jody Offen was pretty good. It really did need to be edited for spelling, and that is why I have given it four stars instead of five.

The story was heartfelt and very believable! The characters were painted in vivid images in my mind, and the background was very well developed.

It is obvious that Ms. Offen put much thought into her version of vampire lore and it has an interesting spin all her own.

I truly enjoyed it and went right to the second book in the series (which was edited).

Looking forward to the third installment now and many more to come!
