About the Author

James R. Morris is Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Brandeis University. He teaches a wide variety of courses for majors and non-majors in evolution, genetics, genomics, anatomy, and health sciences. In addition, he teaches a first-year seminar focusing on Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards from Harvard and Brandeis. His research focuses on the rapidly growing field of epigenetics, making use of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. He currently pursues this research with undergraduates in order to give them the opportunity to do genuine, laboratory-based research early in their scientific careers. Dr. Morris received a Ph.D. in genetics from Harvard University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. In addition, he was a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard University, gave talks to the public on current science at the Museum of Science in Boston, and works on promoting public understanding of personal genetics and genomics.

Daniel L. Hartl is the Higgins Professor of Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He has taught highly popular courses in genetics and evolution at the introductory and advanced levels. His lab studies molecular evolutionary genetics and population genetics and genomics. Dr. Hartl is the recipient of the Samuel Weiner Outstanding Scholar Award and the Medal of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohm Naples. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as President of the Genetics Society of America and President of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution. Dr. Hartl’s Ph.D. was awarded by the University of Wisconsin, and he did post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the Harvard faculty, he served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota, Purdue University, and Washington University Medical School. In addition to publishing more than 350 scientific articles, Dr. Hartl has authored or coauthored 30 books.

Andrew H. Knoll is the Fisher Professor of Natural History in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He is also Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Dr. Knoll teaches introductory courses in both departments. His research focuses on the early evolution of life, Precambrian environmental history, and the interconnections between the two. He has also worked extensively on the early evolution of animals, mass extinction, and plant evolution. He currently serves on the science team for NASA’s mission to Mars. Dr. Knoll received the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award in Science for Life on a Young Planet. Other honors include the Paleontological Society Medal and Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society, London. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He received his Ph.D from Harvard University and then taught at Oberlin College before returning to Harvard.�

Robert A. Lue is Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Director of Life Science Education at Harvard University. He regularly teaches in Harvard’s first-year Life Sciences program and upper-level courses in cell biology. He has a longstanding commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research, and chaired the faculty committee that developed an integrated science course to serve multiple science majors and premedical students. Dr. Lue has also developed award-winning multimedia, including the animation “The Inner Life of the Cell.” He has coauthored undergraduate biology textbooks and chaired education conferences on college biology for the National Academies and the National Science Foundation, and diversity in science for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institutes of Health. He also founded and directs a Harvard life sciences outreach program that serves over fifty high schools. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

It doesn't come with any launch pad access code

Do not buy this book if you are expecting it to come with launch pad access like it advertises. It doesn't come with any launch pad access code and the ~70$ you are paying just for renting is for the hardcopy book only. If you can buy or borrow this from a previous student you can get a better deal because this is really the only online option you're going to find. If you don't want the ebook and access code from the site and want a hard copy, borrow the book from a previous student and just pay for the 80$ online access separately :/ its probably the best deal you're going to get with this ridiculous program.

I had to use this book for my intro biology course, and I must say that it was horrible. The way everything was structured and explained was just awful. I eventually gained the wisdom to go and buy Campbell's biology book and haven't looked back at this deplorable book since.

About the Author

For the average clinician, clinic, or inpatient facility, individuals with borderline personality disorder often represent the most difficult and insoluble cases. The first volume to provide strategies proven effective in controlled clinical trials, this book is a comprehensive, integrated approach to therapy with this population. Marsha Linehan presents specific guidelines that creatively combine the best elements of behavioral, psychoanalytic, strategic, and other commonly employed modalities. A clinical innovator, she has analyzed the aspects of borderline into their component parts and developed a systematized approach to each of them. The first section of the book presents an overview of the disorder and lays out a theoretical framework to guide the therapy. The second describes in detail how to assess borderline patients and how to organize and prioritize treatment goals and behavioral targets. The core of the treatment is the balance of acceptance and change strategies, both within each therapy interaction and over time. For problem solving with borderline personality disorder, the book provides specific strategies for contingency management, exposure, cognitive modification, and skills training. The last component is further elucidated in the companion Skills Training Manual, which programmatically details procedures and includes client handouts for step-by-step implementation. Finally, to enhance interpersonal communication, Dr. Linehan presents three case management sets: consultation to the patient, environmental intervention, and consultation to the therapist. About the Author
Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, ABPP, the developer of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), is Professor of Psychology and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics at the University of Washington. Her primary research interest is in the development and evaluation of evidence-based treatments for populations with high suicide risk and multiple, severe mental disorders. Dr. Linehan's contributions to suicide research and clinical psychology research have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2016 Career/Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. She is also a recipient of the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology from the American Psychological Foundation and the James McKeen Cattell Award from the Association for Psychological Science. In her honor, the American Association of Suicidology created the Marsha Linehan Award for Outstanding Research in the Treatment of Suicidal Behavior. She is a Zen master and teaches mindfulness and contemplative practices via workshops and retreats for health care providers.

Great insight! After reading this book, please read "Doing Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Practical Guide" by Kelly Koerner. I found Koerner's book helpful in simplifying and consolidating the concepts in this book so as to make them easier to understand. Still, this is a great book for any clinician and can be used to compliment many other therapy models.

The Text for treatment of BPD

What can I say? If you're going to learn Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for BPD- you have to have this text. You should also buy the Skills Manual since there are references to it.
I've used some of these skills/techniques with patients who have some of these traits but not BPD - there are great strategies for Behavior Analysis and determining intervention strategies, not to mention validation techniques.
On the other hand - if you are going to treat BPD - make sure to also have a clinical supervisor - it's a very complex population. There are actually on-line courses at Behavioral Tech (Marsha Linehan's Institute) where you can learn on an interactive site, as well.

PAUL PIGNATARO is the founder and CEO of the New York School of Finance (NYSF). He has over thirteen years of experience in investment banking and private equity in business mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, asset divestitures, asset acquisitions, and debt and equity transactions covering the oil, gas, power and utility, internet and technology, real estate, defense, travel, banking, and service industries. At NYSF, Mr. Pignataro continues to participate on the training team, actively providing training at bulge bracket banks and M&A teams at corporations and billion dollar funds. Prior to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Mr. Pignataro worked at TH Lee Putnam Ventures, a $1 billion private equity firm affiliated with buyout giant Thomas H. Lee Partners. Prior to that, he worked in the Investment Banking department of Morgan Stanley.

This series is invaluable for anyone looking to get into investment banking.

Investment banking and private equity are not as mysterious or beyond grasp as they may be portrayed, however, without Paul's series of books I would still be in the dark. For anyone looking for a practical and applicable understanding of how to develop one's skills as an analyst, or hone their comprehension from an associate's point of view, these books are invaluable. The author, Paul, is a wealth of first-hand knowledge, and is a true professor when it comes to helping his readers reach that "aha!" moment.

I purchased the books because I am a career changer, and the understanding that I've received from Paul's guidance has helped me become a capable and formidable analyst when compared to anyone on the Street. Furthermore, the information provided in the books is great to have on hand as a reference; for instance, during a merger, if one would need to find the average percentage of goodwill to be allocated to amortizable intangible assets in a particular industry... it's right there.

Hope this helps others the way that it's helped me!

A great resource!

This book is fantastic! I am a career changer and it definitely reinforced - as well as filled in the gaps - where my b-school courses were lacking. For instance, both this book AND Paul's "Financial Modeling and Valuation" book thoroughly explain how to actually go about doing research in order to optimize the inputs in your financial model. (This part of the modeling process was never really taught in class). Along with the included case study, this book carefully explains each step of the merger modeling process so that an absolute Excel novice can understand and feel confident about the process. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering going to business school and specializing in finance, as it will give you a edge in class. As in my case, it was a fantastic refresher and supplement which has allowed me to take on valuation projects of my own in order to build my resume.

Great book to get to know the fundamentals of investment banking

Great book to get to know the fundamentals of investment banking and M&A specifically. The author explains very thoroughly all the modeling techniques and how to approach a merger/acquisition case from a technical stand point of view. In addition, I've found very helpful the included real case study, which is a great tool not only to master the modeling techniques, but also to understand the whole acquisition process and the dynamics behind it.

The series is a great learning tool whether the ultimate goal is a career in the investment banking field or simply better management of personal financial investments.

handling life's curve balls

Coping skills seem to be a thing of the past for young people- replaced with quick-fixes on their I-Pods- cell phones- bad movies and trashy TV shows. Baldacci weaves a wonderful story that challenges all of us to make lemonade when we are handed lemons. The young people are REAL- and the challenges they face- BIG- Many lessons learned as the story moves. My students had many questions which David Baldacci graciously answered in a hand-written letter. I recommend this book especially for familes who have experienced sudden loss of a loved one.

Unforgettable

Wish You Well has been in book stores for 15 years now but is such a timeless piece of writing that I've reread it several times. It is such a deviation from Baldacci's other writings that I was afraid that I wouldn't like it as his suspense novels are the best. But I decided to go ahead and give it a try as it's set in the Virginia mountains in an era which I love.

The poverty, little education, mountain cruelty, lack of education and medicine are all backstops for this story but there is also the mountain wisdom, sharing, survival and hope that intertwine to make it a most memorable read. Mr. Baldacci fleshes out his characters so thoroughly that they can almost be seen as one becomes involved in this hard to put down book. It involved several generations of one family who gradually learned from one another. It made me laugh and shed tears with a bittersweet ending.

Forever one of my favorites.

LIFE AS SEEN FROM AN INSIDER

This is quite a change from Baldaccii's regular novels. This story is loosely based on the author's family's life in Virginia. Two children, Lou and Oz, are left homeless when their father is killed in an auto accident and their mother is in a mental coma. The children along with their mother go to live with their great-grandmother Louisa in Virginia. Their lives become enmeshed with the mountain folk there and they prosper and mature. An exceptionally good book.
