Mary Embree is an author, literary consultant, editor, book doctor, and writers’ workshop leader. She is the founder of Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network (SPAWN). A former film and television writer and researcher, she became a published author in the 1990s. Her most recent books are The Author’s Toolkit: A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing and Publishing Your Book, a Writer’s Digest Book Club selection now in its third edition, and Starting Your Career as a Freelance Editor, both published by Allworth Press.

Not Worth Buying

Somewhere I got the impression this would be humorous, maybe b/c Bill Bryson's book on the Mother Tongue was. This wasn't. But I learned some dismaying things: 1) that if something is used incorrectly long enough, it becomes acceptable & 2) that what I took pains to learn as correct grammar & try hard to continue to use no longer matters so pretty much anything goes. Mostly this is very long lists of words in a few different categories w/ little commentary. I only glanced over the commonly misspelled ones b/c I had never seen most of those misspellings & one even had the same spelling for both correct & incorrect. I just found this to be pretty boring & not helpful at all which was a huge disappointment b/c I love words & language. I think it is pretty forgettable aside from the fact that I now have to let go of what I consider misuses of language that usually drive me nuts!

Dip in and enjoy this one

This is a solid book that should help writers enhance their writing skills and word usage. Be aware, though, that most readers will dip into it, put it aside, dip into it again, and so forth. And that isn't a criticism, just an observation. Most of the book is devoted to lists of misused/misspelled words and their proper usage/spelling. Then there is a section on new words that I found amusing. Lots of solid information here, but you won't read it in one sitting. Dip in and enjoy.
