Review
"Truly impressive. The chapters capture the power of different therapeutic techniques that involve the use of the arts and play when working with children with attachment problems. The case examples provide a revealing view of and rationale for the interventions of very talented therapists. The book is enriched by the inclusion of recent brain research to help the reader understand why these techniques are indicated. While the emphasis is on youngsters with histories of abuse and attachment problems, the therapeutic techniques described are applicable with all child patients. This is an invaluable resource for both beginning and experienced child and adolescent psychotherapists. Malchiodi and Crenshaw are to be commended for editing such a wonderful, informative book."--Robert Brooks, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

"When children are 'captured' by living in a traumatic environment, it takes the efforts of a brave and knowledgeable therapist to help release them from their psychological bondage. This book brings that insight to fruition in an approach to attachment-focused play and arts therapy that is grounded in knowledge of developmental neuroscience, and it does so with insight and wisdom. It should be required reading for any professional who steps into the world of children exposed to the dark side of human experience."--James Garbarino, PhD, Maude C. Clarke Chair in Humanistic Psychology, Loyola University Chicago

"This book is a gem! Integrating attachment theory, recent advances in neuroscience, and clinical wisdom, the editors have made an outstanding contribution to the field. Contributors weave together theory, research, and practice. Readers gain a deeper appreciation for the rich nuances of creative arts and play therapy as powerful means of helping survivors of attachment trauma. Every chapter contains practical techniques for addressing a wide range of therapeutic issues, and vignettes that bring the concepts to life. Clinicians of all levels of experience will find reading this book to be enlightening, moving, and inspiring."--Lennis G. Echterling, PhD, Director and Professor of Counseling, James Madison University

A Major Work in the Understanding and Treatment of Attachment Problems
By Steven T Baron
Cathy Malchiodi and David Crenshaw, two giants in the fields of Art and Play Therapy respectively have co-edited a wonderful book that illustrates the healing power of these modalities for children with attachment disorders. By utilizing a total of 27 contributors our knowledge of this topic has been significantly enhanced. By weaving together theory, research, and case studies this work offers a comprehensive rationale of the value of not only play and art therapy in particular in providing a potent curative experience for children, but also examines the importance of music, dance and filial therapies among others. This work also provides cutting edge information on the neurobiological role of play. The writers do an exceedingly clear job of presenting the tenets of attachment and the application of such in real world therapeutic situations. The utilization of these approaches in working with at risk populations makes this not only a major academic work but one that has great clinical utility. Overall the editors and contributors are to be heartily commended for providing the therapeutic community with such a meaningful and well written book

A Must-Have Book for Clinicans Who Work With Attachment Problems In Children
By Pam Dyson
Art Therapist Cathy Malchiodi and Play Therapist David Crenshaw have co-edited a book that is the first volume in a new Guilford Press series, "Creative Arts and Play Therapy." The authors do a compelling job explaining that creative, experiential, sensory based therapies stimulate the right brain and help reestablish positive and secure attachment and should be considered the most effective approaches to use with children for whom it comes naturally. Attachment theory and recent brain research is interwoven with detailed clinical approaches including applications to specific populations. A variety of therapeutic approaches from expert clinicians are detailed out in case vignettes giving the reader the sense of being present in the therapy room and witnessing the healing process as it unfolds. Malchiodi and Crenshaw should be commended for their collaborative efforts that have resulted in a wonderful book that is sure to become a staple among both art and play therapists.

Wonderful Book!
By Rosalyn Newman
Creative Arts and Play Therapy for Attachment Problems is a wonderful book that threads theory, brain research, clinical vignettes and practical interventions for working with children and families from the attachment perspective. In my work as a play therapist, I have found this book helpful in providing a framework for working with children and families using attachment as the foundation. The many contributors to the book create diversity of approaches and yet the chapters also compliment each other offering a variety of creative approaches that include music, theraplay, drama, arts and culture (to name a few). Well done to the editors, David Crenshaw and Cathy Malchiodi, two well-respected play therapists in the field. Thank you for putting this wonderful book together!
