The next section analyzes ― in detail ― English syntax from a broadly generative perspective. Then there is an examination of the interaction of syntax and semantics with respect to thematic roles and event structure. A final section covers the study of information structuring, speech act theory, and conversational maxims.

Better for Mainstream English

I am an ELD teacher in an elementary school. I will use this book for future general language referencing, but the most helpful part was the CD. The book was not accurately described in the reviews which I read before purchasing it, but nevertheless a useful resource on the English language; more or different information is needed for ESL/ELD teachers.

Poorly Organized

This textbook is one of the most poorly organized books I have encountered. It oftentimes spews concepts without providing solid examples, and oftentimes the examples can be found pages ahead of the concept, making it difficult to tie together information. I have read multiple linguistics books and this one has done nothing but confuse and complicate ideas that truly can be understood--if explained well. I found this book uses acronyms before explaining them. Just chapter 8 introduces adverbials using different acronyms without defining them until later, yet on the very first pages of the chapter there are convoluted diagrams using the acronyms to illustrate the concept of verb phrases. These equations look like chemistry equations, and fail to be defined. The definition of what an adverbial is does not even occur until the second page after a type of adverbial (adjunct adverbials) has already been introduced.
