MALI RAM GUPTA, PhD, is Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of Pharmaceutical Education & Research Center (PERC) in the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Prior to joining the faculty at Campbell University, he spent twenty-five years in various positions at Revlon, including director of quality control and assurance.

WILLIAM CRAIG STAGNER, PhD, RPh, is Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of Campbell University's Center for Analysis of Pharmaceutical Biomaterials. Prior to joining the faculty at Campbell, he established the Pharmaceutics Department at Glaxo Research Institute.

A Great Resource!

Being a professor of pharmaceutics in a pharmacy school, I am delighted to own a copy of "Integrated Pharmaceutics" book! It is becoming a "to-go" reference for most of my lecture material, and I am glad to provide a review of this book.

I would like to acknowledge the authors for writing such a comprehensive book which serves as a great resource for anyone in the field of Pharmaceutics. This book is a unique compilation of current topics taught to undergraduate as well as graduate students. "Integrated Pharmaceutics" offers various topics from physical pharmacy, biostatistics, pharmaceutical dosage forms and regulatory science. The book provides practical problem solving exercises, case studies and various references, which are helpful for the reader.

The contents are organized so well and inclusive, it extensively covers the basics of preformulation, product design ( formulation) and regulatory science, which is an extremly important part of the pharmaceutical industy. I bought the book for an advanced course in OR.
I believe that the book is nicely put together and has all the material for an beginner to intermediate course in OR. There are better books no doubt.

The book explains the duality theory very nicely.

It uses the tabular form of the Simplex method for LP solving. The Dictionary method is more simple.

If you need to study anything from this book and your prof is not teaching well. Go to YouTube and google Linear Programming. a professor called G. Srinivasan has an amazing set of lectures there. You should be all set after that.

Review BELIEFS ABOUT SECOND AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING Following theories of Vygotsky, Freire, and many others, Dr. Richard-Amato argues that the field of second and foreign language teaching needs to head closer to the sociocultural end of the teaching continuum. However, she is convinced that aspects of cognitive theory must continue to inform a broader and more inclusive paradigm in which western and nonwestern perspectives are considered. Although Dr. Richard-Amato believes that method as magical formula will not fit this paradigm, she thinks that method as a resource critically examined can serve as a useful component in the right environments. She suggests that the field move away from grammar/skill-based teaching and again toward interactive, content-based teaching (including relevant tasks and proficiencies. She argues that explicit grammar and skill instruction appropriately timed need to play an important role. In addition, dialogical language testing if properly developed could make testing processes much more like instructional processes. While emergent participatory language teaching has been an increasing presence in many classrooms, she thinks it would be a mistake to define it as a method or an approach. For it transcends both and gets to the very heart of the student-teacher relationship. It can now and in the future involve students more intimately in their own learning. Even more important to the postmodern world that could emerge will be teacher attributes such as openness, willingness to self-reflect, and ability to adapt to local situations/cultures.

About the Author
Biography Dr. Patricia Richard-Amato is Professor Emeritus at California State University, Los Angeles where she coordinated graduate programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Her experience includes 19 years in public schools of the U.S. and teaching at several TESOL Institutes and Academies in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Richard-Amato was a recipient (along with John Oller, Jr.) of the Mildenberger Medal from the Modern Language Association for Methods that Work. Her more recent works include Making It Happen: From Interactive to Participatory Language Teaching: Evolving Theory and Practice (4th edition) and Academic Success for English Language Learners: Strategies for K-12 Mainstream Teachers (with M. A. Snow). She is one of the founders of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the United Nations Association, USA and is a founding member of the Institute for Language and Education Policy.

Great ideas for classroom activities

This was the text for two of the 5 classes I needed to take for ESL endorsement. I've been in education for over 30 years. I have two masters degrees in special ed. I was really surprised to see the one star reviews of this book. It was one of the most practical books I've encountered. It was chock full of great ideas for classroom activities for students of various ages. A couple short sections were somewhat contradictory or confusing, but overall, it was an easy to read, sensible guide. I liked it!

Great delivery , BAD BOOK

This book was required for an ESL class I took. It was difficult to read, lots of irrelevant facts, and taught me nothing. It has not prepared me at all for the ESL examination. I hated everything in this book accept its quick delivery and great condition.

About the Author
Harold Evans, the author of The American Century and They Made America, is a celebrated historian and journalist. He was the editor of the Sunday Times for fourteen years before coming to America in 1984. He is the founding editor of Conde Nast Traveler, editorial director and vice chairman of U.S. News & World Report, the Atlantic magazine, Fast Company, and the New York Daily News. I would recommend this book to every recent college grad entering the job market and to anybody who has to communicate their ideas in writing. It is a fast read—I did not read the whole thing but I read enough to know that it is a good book to get my kids, both sharking their way up in the working world. Very useful. Good job Harold Evans.

Had to stop reading

I bought this book after reading a favorable review in the Wall Street Journal. I returned it after reading the first quarter of the book. I didn't know that you could return a kindle book. My reaction to the book was visceral. I couldn't bring myself to read another word. My reaction grew stronger. I wanted the book out of my life, out of my kindle. Turns out I was in time to return it. I'll be pleased to receive the refund, but the truth is that the act of removing the book from my kindle was worth it even without getting money back.

The author's advice is nothing new. Use the active voice. Keep the modifier and the modified near each other. Be concise, be clear. ("Eschew obfuscation" is another way of saying that. I saw that one written on a rest room wall in a law school many years ago.) Absolutely, positively avoid adverbs. (That was a joke.) Don't take candy from adjectives. And so on.

He offers examples for correction. The writing that he puts under the microscope is so bad that it could be improved just by rearranging the words at random. There is no great skill needed to repair such awful prose. True, the examples are taken from real life. But if you are reading this book, you are avoiding these errors already.

It was his insistence on parading his political views that caused me to send the book back instead of just putting it aside. His political views are what you would expect from the editor of a string of mainstream news publications. Whether you find those views congenial or annoying, they have nothing to do with good writing. The author ought to have written another book and put them there.

If you have gotten to the end of this book and tell me that the really good stuff starts right where I stopped reading, I will congratulate you on seeing it through. I usually feel an obligation to finish a book I've started. Not this time.

Best Beardie Book Yet!

l am a beginning bearded dragon owner and have a 2 y/o bearded dragon called Bella. This manual tells you the correct terrarium lighting, how to hold a bearded dragon, and all possible ways to figure out the answer to that question that kids and adults alike ask after purchasing the lizard... Is my bearded dragon a BOY or a Girl??, on MALES every thing is wider then FEMALES. What things do l look for?, you may ask. Look at the Cloaca, also known as the Vent, the head, and the femoral glands. This manual also includes a mating, and reproduction section. l still don't agree with the idea of giving beardies lettuce, l really think, due to low nutrition values, that it is absolutely not necessary. To my ultimate displeasure, it doesn't include a list of toxic foods, DON'T GIVE CITRUS TO YOUR BEARDED DRAGON, EVER!
l have reviewed 6 other bearded dragon manuals, including, "Baby Bearded Dragon Care" by Vet Adams, and "Bearded Dragon, The Interactive Quiz Book" by Interactive Games.

CRT has evolved from years of multicultural studies and education around the country. The belief is that some form of structural change is required for true equality in America to take shape. This book is a manuscript for the issues still prevalent in a segregated and racist educational system.

The purpose of this book is to explain the structural difficulties that are in place inside American Education. These difficulties are essentially described as roadblocks towards equality. The authors draw on various educational experiences from around the United States and cite several progressive racial theorists throughout their work. It is obvious that this book cumulates difficult and progressive issues that have been missed by current standardized multicultural education curricula.

The book's true strength is in the readability of language chosen by the authors and editor. Void of overwhelming educational lingo, this book does not try to hide its meaning behind educational linguistic walls. This book is the edge of a battle cry to change the educational structures as we know them today. The authors are well spoken, and are the first to admit that the power is in the struggle towards equality.

Critiques of this work would point towards the lack of solutions to these ever apparent properties. The theme is towards social justice, but the book is weighted by social inequalities. Although the authors do a fantastic job of identifying problems, solutions are left to interpretation. They point towards involving students in working towards social justice as part of a CRT classroom, but few examples are given as to what this would look like in a classroom.

This text is easy to read, easy to understand, and thus, more useful. Other books on Critical Race Theory are more difficult to read. The print on this book is bigger, and the terminology understandable.

Burke brings back Dave Robicheaux in this gripping sequel to Heaven's Prisoners ( LJ 4/1/88). Dave, a former homicide cop, is trying to run his fishing business, care for six-year-old-orphan Alafair, and come to terms with the violent death of his wife, Annie. A chance encounter with an old friend haunted by a troubling secret sets off a chain of events that leaves Dave framed for murder. Desperate to prove his innocence and protect Alafair, Robicheaux is forced to conduct his own investigation. Robicheaux is a complex and very believable character, battling alcoholism, haunted by his wife's death, struggling to hold onto his Catholic faith. Surrounded by violence, he is a man of integrity trying to find an honorable way out. As such he should appeal to fans of Travis McGee and readers of well-crafted suspense. Skillfully evoked settings add to the book's appeal. Highly recommended.

The first is one of the best

Having read James Lee Burke's entire Dave Robicheaux series, I have to say that this novel, which introduced the flawed ex-cop with the mystical bent, is still one of the best. There are several things about this book that hit me as unique and made me want to return every time Burke served up another helping; the first is that Burke's ability with description and locale are unparalled, the second is the depth of character he was able to give Robicheaux by focusing on his personal demons (drink, violence and inner torment from loss and regret), and third is the 'mystical' element that informs each book - sometimes more than others - and allows the plot to be advanced by such devices as messages in dreams and intimations of a 'higher power.' Since Burke himself is a recovering alcoholic he is able to make this side of Dave's life quite real and moving.
This book (which won the Edgar Award in 1990) differs from later ones in the series in that Dave strays far afield from the rural Louisiana coast setting readers normally associate with him. But he is also, in the beginning, a more complex and interesting character. As the series progresses he becomes stiffer and more self righteous. Here he is unsure of himself and trying to come to grips with a life that has him on the ropes.
This is some of Burke's best writing and I would highly recommend it to mystery fans who have never tasted this rich Louisiana stew. It is unique and memorable.

Excellent story and characters

Of all James Lee Burke's wonderful books, this was his first commercial success and remains his best single novel. It is a gritty mystery set in Louisiana which introduces us to Dave Robicheaux, a flawed but intelligent and good-hearted lead character.
Burke is a wonderful writer for two main reasons. First, his characters are well-written; they are memorable, realistic, and intriguing. Their dialogue absolutely CRACKLES.
Secondly, no reader can be unaffected by his descriptions- poetic even in the most grisly scenes. Seeing these scenes through Robicheaux's eyes, scenes as well-crafted as only Burke can do, we realize the depth and beauty of Robicheaux's mind.
Black Cherry Blues is less a Mystery Novel and more a Literary Work, an ideal way to spend an evening.

My New Favorite Detective Series

Black Cherry Blues is my second James Lee Burke read - I also enjoyed Pegasus Descending. I think this is the superior book in my opinion but nevertheless I'm now hooked on the Dave Robicheaux series and have to get them all.

I would compare Burke's writing to Michael Connelly in regards to a dark element in all the characters - "good" and "bad" ones. These are flawed characters who've lived hard lives. Dave Robicheaux is like your "Harry Bosch" character of Michael Connelly's except with a more small town Louisiana/Cajun flavor.

Burke has a real talent for taking you to Louisiana and back - the anecdotes about growing up cajun are fascinating and warmly sentimental.

The rich descriptions, atmosphere and cultural flavor coupled with a strong Clint Eastwood type of character make these stories winners. There is a sort of noir feel like the old Clint Eastwood movies.

Pegasus Descending got me interested but this book hooked me and made me a serious fan.

I highly recommend - especially if you like Michael Connelly's work.
